The South Charente is a quiet corner of France, an undulating land of meadows, copses, sunflowers and vineyards, and sleepy hamlets that seem to have been here for ever. Yet within minutes are lively little market towns like Chalais, there's the old city of Angouleme to the north, and beautiful Bordeaux is around an hour to the south.
Chalais has all you need for your holiday, from a supermarket and 4 bakers to a colourful street market. Other nearby attractions include Brossac with its beach and bathing lake, picturesque Aubeterre, Riberac market, you could canoe on the tree-lined River Dronne, or visit Cognac or St.Emilion, home to some of the finest clarets. The coast is not too far away, and there are some lovely unspoiled beaches. At the property there's a large lawn for a game of croquet, you could play 'boules' round the garden, and there's ample space for children to play. You can stroll through the woods and vineyards to the next hamlet, or walk down into the village.
