This is a traditional Charente farmhouse, and is a peaceful holiday haven, far from any busy roads. The large, sunny garden slopes gently southwards, and covers nearly 2.5 acres. Beyond lie quiet woods and vineyards, and there is a superb view towards the distant hills of the Dordogne some 10 miles away. A special feature of the property is the covered terrace, which makes a welcome, shaded dining area and outdoor kitchen; it is equipped with fridge, sink, barbecue and gas hob, and a pine dining table. You can serve drinks, prepare a meal and enjoy the view. Just four steps below the terrace is the secluded, private pool, set in its own 'garden within a garden' and surrounded by lawns, flower-borders and a sun terrace. The house has been carefully restored, is spacious and comfortably furnished, and remains cool in summer; the ideal place for a quiet, relaxing holiday in France. The house and garden are not shared with other holiday makers, and you have exclusive use of the pool.

The South Charente is a quiet corner of France, an undulating land of meadows, copses, sunflowers and vineyards, and sleepy hamlets that seem to have been here for ever. Yet within minutes are lively little market towns like Chalais, there's the old city of Angouleme to the north, and beautiful Bordeaux is around an hour to the south. Chalais has all you need for your holiday, from a supermarket and 4 bakers to a colourful street market. Other nearby attractions include Brossac with its beach and bathing lake, picturesque Aubeterre, Riberac market, you could canoe on the tree-lined River Dronne, or visit Cognac or St.Emilion, home to some of the finest clarets. The coast is not too far away, and there are some lovely unspoiled beaches. At the property there's a large lawn for a game of croquet, you could play 'boules' round the garden, and there's ample space for children to play. You can stroll through the woods and vineyards to the next hamlet, or walk down into the village.

  • Outside the peak season in 2010 (July 3 to September 3) there is a £30 per week discount for occupancy by 2 persons only. Rates include electricity, gas, water and bed linen. Clean bed linen is available weekly. A Welcome Pack of groceries and basic cleaning materials is provided and there is a pre-arrival shopping service.
  • Changeover day is normally Saturday. The letting period starts at 16.00 on day of arrival, and ends at 10.00 on day of departure. However guests are welcome to use the pool & summer kitchen from 14.00 on day of arrival. During school holidays priority is normally given to bookings of a fortnight.

  • Both principal bedrooms are on the ground floor, making the accommodation at the house fairly suitable for the elderly or infirm, although there are one or two steps outside. Bedroom 1 has beautiful views East and South, and a high, beamed ceiling. It is wonderfully large and airy, and could double as a second lounge or family bedroom. There is a large double-bed (queen-size) with extra leg-room, and a private en-suite bathroom; there is also a sofa and desk. Bedroom 2 features an attractive stone fireplace and has a view across the garden.The shower room is just across the adjacent passage. Upstairs is Bedroom 3, a most attractive and spacious attic room dominated by massive old beams; headroom is slightly restricted at the edges of the room. Air-conditioning at nominal cost can be provided in this room , should the need arise. All bedrooms are equipped with fans and reading lights.

Notes: The main room in the house is the big French ‘sejour’ (living room) with its large stone fireplace, terracotta tiles and timbered ceiling. This is a real old farmhouse room, and like all the rooms it looks south across the garden. Full of character there is a spacious lounge area with a big sofa and armchairs. To one side of the lounge is an oak dining table and beyond that the kitchen area which has been planned to blend into the room with electrical appliances carefully concealed. It is well equipped, there are two sinks and ample work surfaces. French windows lead from the lounge onto a wide, tiled terrace, with another dining table, ideal for breakfast and dinner. There is also an entrance hall with plenty of space for holiday clutter. The beautiful garden is a key feature of the property and has been extensively planted with a wide range of trees, shrubs and flowers. Grass paths meander round the garden, there are big lawns, and a secluded area around the private pool.

Small children . : Children over 5 years of age who have learnt to swim are welcome but supervision will be necessary, and parents are requested to take note of the following. The grounds are open and unfenced, and adjoin woodland and farmland. There is a small pond at the end of the garden. Although the farm-track that fronts the grounds is little used, it remains a public road.

Swimming pool safety . : In accordance with French law, a pool security system will be in operation. However, no security system is perfect. Parents are advised therefore that this property is not available for families with children who are not able to swim without assistance or a buoyancy aid.

Getting to the South Charente: France's excellent motorway network makes it easy to reach the Charente from all the main Channel ports or the Tunnel, and with an overnight connection to Caen or St.Malo one could even be here in time for a late lunch. For those who prefer to fly to France and hire a car, both Bordeaux and Bergerac airports are within an easy drive and are served by British Airways and Easyjet, and Ryanair and Flybe respectively. Ryanair have now started a service to nearby Angouleme. It is also possible to travel by Eurostar and French TGV(high-speed train) to Angouleme where cars can be hired.

The description of the location, gardens and property are spot on. All actually exceeded our expectations. The house, gardens and pool were immaculate and a lot of thought had gone into the facilities and information provided by the owner. The surroundings were beautiful with lots of safe walks available from the house. Even though the property is superbly positioned away from any main roads there is a wealth of places to visit close by.
I would recommend this to anybody looking for a holiday with a bit of everything. There is nothing better after a long day sight seeing and shopping in Bordeaux than coming back to relax by the pool! Would love to go again and maybe we will!

Fantastic holiday

We stayed at the farmhouse the last two weeks in June 2008, and had a lovely time. It rained the first couple of day's but after that it was lovely and sunny. The farmhouse was very french, and the main bedroom was huge. It's the outside that makes this holiday because David the owner keeps the grounds immaculate. The pool and outside dining area are great and the view from the pool is absolutely beautiful. We saw a deer running across the field and there is an abundance of wildlife. We had a lovely and relaxing holiday and would one day love to return.
