Photos and Description of this Charente holiday farmhouse 3 Bedrooms (1 double, 2 twins), 2 bathrooms (1 en-suite), sleeps 6.

A 16th.century barn conversion, with exposed stone and beams, attached to the owners farmhouse. Totally self contained (own front and back entrance). The spacious accommodation is all on ground level. It is furnished, partly with antiques, in French country style, and whilst retaining its original old charm, still offers modern day amenities of central heating, plenty of hot water and comfy beds. The kitchen is well equipped with fridge, freezer, gas cooker, microwave oven, dishwasher and washing machine. The farmhouse is idyllically situated with no passing traffic. It stands in well kept gardens and woodland of four acres, bordered by the little river Cibiou. Perfect environment for our guests to relax and unwind. The hamlet of eleven houses has no shops. The travelling baker passes most days. There are three near by villages with basics - boulangerie, bar, restaurant and church. The market towns of Civray and Ruffec with several supermarkets are 10 to 15 minutes by car.

Nearest Airport: Poitiers or Limoges. at 40 Miles
Nearest Ferry: St. Malo or Caen at 260 Miles
Nearest Train: Ruffec at 8 Miles
Nearest Beach: beach at 80 Miles
Car: necessary
This is a region of Romanesque architecture, meandering rivers, little villages & sunflowers. Close by are the towns of Ruffec and Civray where on market days locals sell their excellent fresh produce. The pretty Marais Poitevin (green Venice), in the west of the region consists of narrow leafy canals winding through mediaeval fields. A trip on a hired punt is a must. The coastal town of La Rochelle has a wonderful harbour and is a superb venue for sampling local seafood. The pretty islands of Oleron and Re have excellent beaches. South of the region are the lovely old towns of Angouleme and Cognac, where boat trips on the river Charente & guided tours of the many distilleries are available. A little further lie the renowned vineyards of Bordeaux. To the east is Limoges famous for its fine porcelain and to the north, the city of Poitiers, vineyards of the Haut-Poitou & the Futurescope theme park. Close by is the Vallee des Singes where many species of monkeys are at total liberty.

Notes: At our guest's disposal we have three bikes and a tandem. (try it out!!) Our pool has a salt water system with safety alarm and is available for guests use. The large garden is well fenced. A new addition for children's amusement - a tree house in the walnut tree. There is a large selection of board games, books, videos and DVDs. A lovely area for walking, cycling, fishing, canoeing, river bathing or simply relaxing. There are several good restaurants within a few kilometres to suit all tastes, from simple regional dishes to gourmet extravaganzas. Your English hosts, who speak French are willing to assist if required with any restaurant reservations etc. etc. Please feel free to ask if you have any special requirements.

2005...A superb gite in a wonderful hamlet. The essence of rural France, and at the end of each day, peace and tranquility in a beautiful garden-bliss!.....Clare, Bronagh,Jean,Sher and Freya.
So lovely, the sun through the bamboo at dawn and the birds singing. Have enjoyed it all, so tranquil....Angela and Bill, Anne and Don.

The Perfect Getaway

Thank you for delivering everything you promised in the website and more. Everything was exactly as described, the cottage was SO clean and well equipped and a view that money cannot buy. It was great to be able to fall into the swimming pool after driving and be greeted with a cuppa.

We used the bicycles to explore the lanes and we cycled to the nearby Chateau for a tour. We also visited, Cognac, Poitiers, local markets, briconte, and a "must visit" to a nearby restaurant as recommended by the owners who were always discretely available to provide us with local information.

Our family enjoyed using the shade of the tree house to play board games when the weather was very hot and the pool had been exhausted.

All in all, Charente is a lovely, quiet area with plenty of places to visit and the gite a great place to be based to keep the family (including 3 teenagers) happy.

relaxing holiday

Very hospitable owners. A lovely clean, spacious property which was well equipped. A very quiet rural spot with a lovely view over the valley. I would definately recommend it to a friend and consider booking again for our family. Lots of books and DVD's and videos to watch and we all did several jigsaw puzzles. We also really enjoyed the nearby Vallee des Signes.

Immaculate presentation, normally tranquil setting, well equipped, helpful owners, excellent views.
Welcome tea on arrival for the weary traveler.
Open access to the bikes would have been useful.
Easier access to the pool would have been appreciated.
Some relaxing sun chairs would have been welcome.
Owner's Response: Our guests are shown the bicycle barn and have free access to help themselves.
The pool is situated in the garden 25 metres from the rear french doors of the Logis. Because of guests with small children there is a locked gate (key provided) to access the pool area.
Sun chairs can be found in the store cupboard in the Logis.

Perfect Getaway Holiday Retreat

A wonderful cottage in a fantastic location and immaculately kept. We took our 2 year old just for a week and whilst there was plenty to do in the surrounding area he was perfectly entertained in the immediate vicinity - horses, pigs, dogs and rabbits to go and visit every day.
The accommodation being all on the ground floor was ideal as we were happy to let our son run around knowing he was perfectly safe. Plus the garden was fully enclosed without taking anything away from the fantastic view.
The owners Peter and Veronica was very friendly and very helpful with any queries or information that we needed.
There is plenty to see and do and some very nice places to eat out - a mixture of pretty villages and busier towns all within reach.
Only negatives were that towels are not included within the linen -which is not so much of a problem if you are traveling by car but may bulk out your luggage if traveling by plane. Also if you are keen cooks and don't want to eat out every night then some of the kitchen equipment was limiting - serving bowels, cloths etc.
All in all though a fantastic time had by all and in a beautiful location - one we hope to return to in the future.
Owner's Response: For our future guests. We are more than happy to supply bath and hand towels with the linen if you are travelling by air. Thank you Lou for pointing out a possible problem.
