Culturally Rich and Diverse

The Pays Basque has been catering to French citizens pour decades and do a great job. Everything you will ever need is here. In potentially one of the most culturally rich spots inn Europe, France meets Spain and the Basque Country in a mix of character, complexity, language, food, passion, leisure and relaxation. The people from this region and these cultures really understand what good quality of life is ... and they are very keen to share. Come and see for yourself ... you will love it!!! The countryside is a delight; the rolling green hills are popular with the few British visitors that the region receives. The foothills rise to the mountains of the Pyrénées which are home to dozens of hiking trails including the famous coast-to-coast GR10 track. Eagles, wild horses and the occasional brown bear make this one of Europe’s most exotic wildlife locations. The Pyrénées also provide thrill-seekers with a range of extreme sports from white-water rafting to paragliding.

Suggestions for Day Trips

• A tour of Basque country villages: Ascain, Ainhoa, Sare, La Bastide Clairance Cambo-les-Bains, Espelette and St-Jean-Pied-de-Port • A visit to Bayonne, the under-rated ‘capital’ of the Pays Basque; sample its famous chocolates and hams and visit the splendid cathedral • Wine-tasting in the vineyards of Irouleguy, St Emilion, Graves and Medoc to name but a few wine regions surrounding Bordeaux • A visit to the city of Pau for sight-seeing, boutique shopping and café-crawling • Crossing the border into Spain for a visit to San Sebastian, Pamplona or the Guggenheim museum at Bilbao These are all great examples

BIARRITZ - After the wilderness years of the 1980s, this town is back in fashion. Celebrities and sports stars are flooding back to live in the region (including tennis star Guy Forget, footballer Bixente Lizarazu and Irish Rugby legend Mike Gibson, who has a holiday home in the area). A compact and stylish town, Biarritz really does have something for everyone...famous beaches, museums, great restaurants of all quality and prices, shopping, casino, Europe's oldest golf course, horse-riding and the south west's famous spa and thalassotherapy centres. The Basque Country is a little world all of its own. The regional cuisine and architecture provide character enough but more than that, this ‘country’ also has its own language. The best way to soak up the culture is to visit one of the many fêtes or ‘festivals of strength’ that take place in the high season, like la Fête de Bayonne held at the start of August each year. Awesome fun for young and older ...

Other Activities Wine Tourism

Skiing Information:

LA PIERRE-SAINT-MARTIN - Located on the Western side of the Pyrenees, la Pierre-Saint-Martin offers exceptional panoramas: a beautiful little village nestled in a mugho pine forest as well as holiday ski in/ski out apartment buildings set just opposite the imposing Pic d’Anie. Ideal for family holidays with children, it is also perfectly adapted for learning the new snow sports or for practicing leisure skiing in the middle of nowhere. As for the cross-country skiing and snowshoeing lovers, they will be able to do wonderful hiking on the Nordic Area. GOURETTE - With a completely remodelled ski domain and brand new equipments, Gourette ranks among the most famous resorts in the Pyrenees. Everything has been rethought... from the pistes layout down to the super modern lifts, so that everyone be able to make the most of her/his skiing time in a quality nature environment.

Golf Information:

This is arguably the best region for golf in France, especially with the addition of the courses in northern Spain. The diversity and quality of the courses here cannot be found elsewhere in France and we have one of the best and consistent year-round climates for golf – mild winters and mild, long summers. The best time of the year to play is in July as the greens do not get faster, and September / October when the courses are generally empty of tourists and the weather great. The Courses to check include Arcangues, Biarritz Le Phare (second oldest course in Europe and home of the Biarritz Cup), Chiberta (Anglet), Chantaco (Saint-Jean-de-Luz), Makila Bassussarry (Bayonne), Real Golf Club of San Sebastian (Hondarribia), and Hossegor, Seignosse & Moliets (arguably the best courses in the region) just 35mins away. Bordeaux is also a golfing haven with Medoc & Lacanau courses being the pick of the bunch justa few hours drive up north.
