A converted 17th century barn lovingly restored to retain its character and history. Originally built before the Vendee wars but burned by troops of the revolution in the 18th century, evidence of this can be seen on the stones of the walls where the colour has turned from creamy yellow to a rose hue. It is spacious with lots of natural light and is furnished to the highest standard for 6 guests. A perfect base for exploring the Vendee and its history - or simply relax and enjoy rural France and its Atlantic coastline. The barn is located near the village of Sigournais and its medieval chateau. The nearest large shopping centre is 10 minutes away in Chantonnay, although there is a shop in Sigournais where you can buy virtually everything that you might need and this is only 5 minutes away. The Vendee is renowned for its excellent climate - as much sunshine as the Cote d'Azur.

Spend a day at the beaches of Sable d'Olonne, la Tranche or la Faute, take a boat out in the Marais Poitevin (green Venice of France). Go for lunch in La Rochelle and antique hunt in the afternoon or see the sights. The Lac du Rochereau, 5 minutes from the Barn, is probably one of the most beautiful spots you have ever seen. You can swim from its beach, take a boat out, have a picnic, admire and paint the views, or try fishing for carp. Go for a day's sightseeing or shopping in Nantes or Poitiers. Nearby there's riding, horse racing, surfing, water sports, cycling, running, golfing and even night clubs for the enegetic! Also there's ballooning, bird watching, walks, forests, canoeing, many places of historic interest, markets, a zoo, villages, lots of bars and restaurantsfor the not so energetic. Sigournais is only 25km from the Puy du Fou, the second biggest tourist attraction in France after the Eiffell tower. This is a spectacular day out for all the family.

  • Please talk to us about discounted ferry rates.
    Arrival from 4pm and departure by 10am so that we can prepare for the next guests. We will supply you with keys in advance of your arrival and everything will be prepared for your stay. A deposit of 20% of the rental is required at the time of booking. Your booking will be confirmed upon receipt of this deposit and you will receive a contract for signature and return. Rental includes the use of all bed linen, towels, tea towels, cleaning materials, electricity and water. A security deposit of £120 is required.

  • Bedroom 1 is a double bedroom with an antique French double bed. There are fitted wardrobes and a seating area in the bay window. Bedroom two is the mezzanine floor where there are two single beds. (This was originally the hay loft when the barn was built). Because of this the headroom is low but quaint, yet adequate. There are two large fitted wardrobes, one for clothes and the other for suitcases, etc. If there are 5 guests as in a couple and 3 children we can put an extra bed on the mezaninne - please advise. The living area includes a sofa bed. We can also provide a cot for a baby but please let us know that you need this at the time of booking. BARN IS NOW WI FI ENABLED

Notes: If you have a baby we are able to supply bath, cot, high chair, playpen etc, but please advise what you require at the time of booking. Swimming - there is a beach at the Lac de Rochereau which is 5 mins away where you can swim. Also there is a swimming pool in Chantonnay but there are many beaches within 40-60 minutes for your days out. There are a number of books, adult and children's games, CD's for every music taste, DVD's on a number of subjects/films for adults and children. Pets are not allowed as this is farmland and is home for many, many cows. The upside of this is that you can buy eggs and milk at the farms. There is a wood burning fire in the living area - wonderful in winter. It is a no smoking house due to the enormous amount of wood in the property. There is a smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher for safety. Outside on the patio is a table, benchs, pBBQ. In the garden shed are 6 chairs and loungers. This patio overlooks fields belonging to the property.

Golf: There are 4 golf courses all within an hours drive. These are Les Fontenelles. Famous for its driving range, this golf course with its many hedgerows provides an excellent succession of water features, maritime pine and oaks over 2 miles. La Domangère. The highest slope in France with a wealth of shots to be played, this is a delightful course that those in search of new challenges will want to experience. (This is supposed to be one of the more difficult golf courses in France). Port Bougenay. On the edge of the sea and bordering an enclosed forest, this golf course overlooks the marina of Port Bourgenay. With hedgerows and pine forest, this course provides a two-in-one experience. Mazieres en Gatine. Set amongst lakes and ancient trees, this course produces surprise after surprise behind each hedgerow.

A wonderful stay in the Vendee

We have just returned from a wonderful stay in the beautiful Vendee. The Barn has everything you could need for a relaxing home away from home - with all the creature comforts you might need. The layout made for a great atmosphere in which to relax and enjoy the local food. From its rural aspect, the Barn is also a great central location for exploration and we were able to take in both Nantes and La Rochelle to experience the city life. Most days we ventured along the local country lanes which had some of the most gorgeous outlooks. I was pregnant during my stay and when we realised that the facilities included all the baby gear, we quickly decided to return again in the summer with our new arrival. You will not be disappointed with this holiday spot!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for that we just love to know that people enjoy our home and the area as much as we do. The baby kit only goes into the barn when needed so isn't obvious but we have cots/high chairs/bath/play pen/sterilizer/etc in fact everything you should need - just ask at the time of booking.

Getting away from it all

A beautiful little property with everything we needed for a relaxing break - nice local restaurants, interesting area (if that's your thing) and a great place to relax.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Girls Getaway, Sightseeing, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway
Owner's Response: So happy to have another satisfied guest. Because its rural its very tranquil and a great place to unwind. Or there is so much to see and do within a 20 minute radius. The loal restaurants are wonderful - the Morliere about 10 minutes walk away, Kinours - the trademans cafe were you can get a 5 course meal with wine and coffee for 11 euros and La Cigalle in Nantes supposedly the best brasserie in France outside of Paris and the decor is to die for.
Everybody who stays seems to love the area and so do we.

Excellent Gite

Two others and my self hired out this gite only for a short five day break and as soon as we arrived we loved the property. It was well renovated, feeling new but still in keeping with its surrounds. It had all the mod cons and everything you need in the kitchen if you wish to dine in. Two toilets, a shower and two bedrooms was just perfect for us that we did not feel on top of each other. It was well located if you wanted to get out and about but we lazed about in the garden patio in the sun most days.
Summing up a lovely choice.

Lovely Cottage

My wife and I have just spent a most enjoyable week and a half in the barn and we are both pleased to agree with all the positive comments in the previous reviews.
In addition, the owner always seemed willing to "go the extra yard" to ensure our stay was hassle free and comfortable.
The barn comfortably accommodates 4 people, 2 in the main double-bedded bedroom and another 2 in twin beds on a mezzanine. (I would guess that it must be a bit cozy with 6 people sharing.) It is very well equipped all round - my wife is a keen cook and found everything that she needed.
The owners operate a very practical regime, whereby all breakages can be replaced directly from the local supermarket in Chantonnay, so there was no problem replacing a couple of broken pieces of crockery. The barn is about an hour's drive to the best beaches or major cities (Nantes, La Rochelle etc.), but the roads are good and the driving is easy. The little hamlet of La Requerre is lovely and quiet (there's virtually no traffic through the village), and the locals all seemed very welcoming to their temporary neighbours. There's a wide variety of local eateries, one within walking distance (the excellent Morliere) but most a short drive away. We are delighted to recommend this property.

Owner's Response: It's lovely for me to have guests who appreciate the barn and the area. It can be really quiet and tranquil or within 20 minutes there are loads of things to see and do. With regards to "cozy" we only take 6 guests from April to October as the weather is so good we know people will not be spending much time indoors. I love cooking so the barn is well equiped, we try to have everything you could want and the replacemant of broken crockery arrived because we are not there all the time so have to pay people to do go and replace things for us so as guests are going to the supermarket every so often we are delighted when guests replace things.

The description is accurate. A very nice holiday house, well equipped with good quality fixtures and fittings and every cook's hearts desire of a holiday-kitchen. Spotlessly clean and a home from home. The owner has gone to a lot of trouble to make sure everything is just so and takes a personal interest in helping to identify best travel arrangements /ferry deals etc. We will certainly go back.
