The Mas de L'Elze is a rambling collection of old stone buildings, clinging to a sun-drenched, south facing slope on the edge of the Ardechois Cevennes. In the past, these buildings served a multitude of purposes typical of the local countryside: a silk-worm loft, a drying and smoking area for chestnuts, a barn for storing hay and raising geese and ducks for the 'gavage'. Now, they have been lovingly transformed into a set of completely independent luxury houses, from which you can fully appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the surrounding countryside. There are 3 gites at L'Elze. Two - La Clede and La Magnanerie - are small, open plan houses for 2/4 and 2/3 people respectively, while the third - La Grange, is a larger house which sleeps 6-8. All are completely independent and have private terraces for al fresco dining. For large groups it is always possible to rent a number of the gites together. All houses share a large 15x5m swimming pool and jacuzzi and gym.

La Clede is the second of our houses providing comfortable accommodation for 2/4 people. It has a floor area of approximately 55m2. It was originally used to dry chestnuts; a fire was lit on the ground floor which heated the chestnuts on the floor above. Now, the sleeping area is found on this floor with a double and 2 single beds. There is a lounge/diner, an open-plan kitchen and shower room underneath. Outside, there is a sheltered, south-facing private terrace under one of the chestnut trees that supplied La Clede with its raw material.

The Mas de L'Elze is right in the middle of the Ardechois Cevennes - magnificent countryside with rolling hills and rugged mountains, dropping down to crystal clear rivers in deep gorges. L'Elze faces due south so there is always sunshine. We are located at 550m so even when it is hot there is usually a refreshing breeze. L'Elze is situated roughly halfway between Largentiere and Valgorge, some 30 kilometres south-west of Aubenas, in the Department of the Ardeche. We are between Provence and the Cevennes and the scenery is wonderful. There are far fewer tourists than in either of these more well-known areas.

Wonderful owners/hosts who live on the site who also offer a good 3 course evening meal service - great when you arrive or when you don't fancy cooking! They also provide an excellent welcome pack with local wine, cheese, home made bread and offer home grown vegetables.
Superb panoramic views over the Cevennes mountains, very good swimming pool in excellent location. The gite complex is surrounded by mountains and forests including numerous sweet chestnut trees.
It takes around 20 mins to drive down a winding road to the nearest town of Largentiere which is historic, full of character, friendly with good restaurants and a weekly market.
The gite was comfortable, clean with a well stocked kitchen. The shower room was adequate. Outside the gite, the stairs are deep and steep, a handrail would help.
Overall, highly recommended as we found it to be a lovely place to relax and recharge our batteries!
