Photos and Description of this Ile de Re holiday house Sleeps 6, 3 double bedrooms, 1 with own sink/WC. Separate bath/shower room

The house, originally built circa 1890, is situated in a pretty, cobbled square. It was fully refurbished in Autumn 2004, and repainted winter 2008, to provide a charming holiday home. On the ground floor there is an independent kitchen fully equipped with hob, oven, dishwasher, washing machine/dryer, microwave, 2 fridges etc. There is a large open fireplace, a small breakfast table and a view out to the square. There is a downstairs bathroom with bath/shower plus separate loo. The sitting / dining room is very spacious with TV/DVD/Stereo and has views out to the pretty terraced, south facing garden. The garden has a large table with parasol for eating out, a barbecue, sun loungers, (repainted) chairs. Upstairs there are three double bedrooms (one with own sink/WC): x 1 double, x2 twins. The house is situated in La Flotte on the island of Ile de Re. Ile de Re is off the Atlantic coast of France just south of the Loire. The island is reached by crossing the bridge from La Rochelle. Once you are on the island, the house is about 5 - 10 minutes drive along the northern coast of the island. Preferred mode of transport for many islanders is by bicycle although if you wish to explore the wider region around La Rochelle then hiring a car may be useful. That said, there is a lot to do on the island so we rarely bother to roam far. La Rochelle is the nearest airport however Rochefort is also a short (40 mins) drive away. La Rochelle is also well connected to the extensive Peage system not to mention the efficient French railways.

Additional information about rental rates

  • 50% payment required as confirmation of booking. Remaining 50% payable six weeks in advance of holiday. Additional £250 deposit cheque held to cover possible damage during stay - only cashed if needed. Guests must have their own insurance which would cover any more significant damage to the property. There is a charge for cleaning payable direct to the key holder of min. 60 euros per week - for longer stays, this charge increases by 15 euros per additional week. In addition, if needed sheets can be supplied for an additional charge 20 euros per person (approx. subject to which beds used etc.).
  • There is a phone at the property - incoming calls only. You can however very easily buy a phone card at the Tabac so that you can make outgoing calls freely. There is now plug-in broadband at the house (no wifi) and there is internet access in the village.

Well, when can I go back !
Loved everything about the house,so tastefully decorated & very well equipped. Close to the beach & lovely harbour restaurants.The food market everday,this had great produce.We cycled every where, the people were really friendly.what a lovely walled garden to sit & have meals in.Clean, light & airy what a delight. Character cottage in La Flotte

The house was exactly what we needed for a group of mixed ages (30 to 60) for a week in mid-September. It’s located in a quiet street in a lovely harbour town (described as one of France’s prettiest villages) a short walk from the town centre and the nearest beach. Although we were staying after the school holiday season, parking was rarely available outside, and we generally used the free car park nearby. The rooms and furnishing are as attractive as shown on site – in fact the large living room is even roomier than the photo suggests, and delightful place to gather for an evening meal, after a day’s cycling, swimming, bird-watching (bring binoculars) on the patchwork of salt marshes, sailing, or sampling superb local seafood (oysters a speciality) in local markets and restaurants. Books, games, DVDs, and internet access all added the enjoyment of our stay. For six adults (we were four) the one bathroom/shower might have been a bit stretched. A car is certainly not essential and access from the airport (La Rochelle/Ile de Re) to the island is very easy, but we made use of our hire car to travel inland to explore canals of the Marais Poitevin (France’s Green Venice), an hour or so away. For surf-seekers, there’s the possibility of bigger waves on the Ile d’Oléron if all is calm on Ile de Re (but remember that the bridge toll onto the island is a hefty 9 euros). We highly recommend a visit to this delightful island.

A lovely house in a beautiful little village!

We stayed here the first week of September 2009. The house is beautifully decorated, and very comfortable. The kitchen is well-equipped and we enjoyed many delicious meals in the garden. La Flotte is a charming place, and everything you need is nearby -- shops, bicycle rental & the BEACH! Felicity's tips were also very much appreciated. We only ventured off the island once, to visit the aquarium in La Rochelle -- also highly recommended. A car is not necessary -- we travelled by train to La Rochelle, and then by bus to La Flotte; we rented bikes to get around during our stay. To sum up, there is plenty to do and see on the Ile de Re, and I would heartily recommend both the house and the island to anyone seeking a relaxing holiday.

Perfect base, especially for family with kids

We loved this place! Ile de Re is gorgeous, and so easy to reach from the UK. We flew to La Rochelle, no queue for bags because it is such a small airport, no queue for the hire car, jumped in the car and were in La Flotte in 25 minutes. The house is lovely, exactly as described, and extremely well equipped. We cooked, barbequed, and ate out when we felt like it - possibilities for buying your own fresh ingredients or for eating out are all close by. Don't miss the medieval covered market in La Flotte, and look especially for the Ile de Re stalls with all local produce. Back at the house the enclosed garden is great for kids, perhaps unstable todders would need watching on the stone steps but anyone older would have a great and safe time while you cook, sunbathe or relax with a glass of wine. Parking on the square was a bit of an issue even before the main season started, and one day we could not find a parking space even in the free car park round the corner. But if you come with a car to Ile de Re you tend to leave it in one space for some days as you bike around, so it pays to spend some time waiting for a space in the right place.
We found biking to the beaches great fun and what is nice is that they are all quite different - so don't get stuck going to just one beach all holiday - ring the changes.
The house was an ideal base for our holiday, couldn't fault it on any grounds, and we would love to come back.

Our first visit to Ile de Re which remains unspoilt, delightfully pretty and quintessentially French. The house was fantastic, well located and well equipped. The courtyard is a wonderful place to relax in, especially after a long days cycling with a glass of rose!
We appreciated beach equipment, buckets & spades, towels and mats being available and would recommend this property to all. Our young family found it an ideal base from which to explore the island.
