Sports:
There are a vast array of sports options for those inclined - some are listed below:
There is a very popular golf course near Royan, as well as numerous horse stables around Palmyere.
There is also world class zoo at Palmyere. The beach/port in Royan hosts a sailing club for children and adults as well as deep sea fishing charters.
For those into more extreme sports, the beach hosts a variety of activities including a very popular spot for kite surfing with sheltered water yet good winds, plus wide beaches for land yachts. You can walk to the tourist information office from the house for booking and information about local events and activities.
For cyclist, the area has extensive forest trails through the national forest all the way up the peninsula.
There are also several excellent tree climbing/arial walkway locations nearby.
Historical:
For your sight seeing days there are Roman Ruins in the Saintes and St Jean Angley. A further trip is to the Island Forts off the I'sle d'Oleron. La Rochelle provided a full day of activity with its Aquarium, Naval museum and wonderful old town. The nearby town of Cognac frequently hosts cultural events such as Jazz festivals.
Of course there are the numerous vinyards of the Bordeaux region. One we like is to the east of Bordeaux, the Cote de Blaye with both fantastic wine, sightseeing and activities for children. It is also worth tasting the local 'Pineau de Charente', a regional fortified wine.
For two excellent days out go visit the world class 'Puy de Fou' a mediaeval activity park just two hours drive away or Futuroscope just up the motorway from Saintes.
Beaches:
There are a wide selection of beaches within an easy drive of the house.
Le Grande Cote is the closest, a few minutes drive away, with it safe, sheltered waters, long wide beaches and interesting sinking World War 2 bunkers. These beaches are inside the forested national park and are excellent for picnics!
The flat beaches in and around Royan and St. Palais are safe for very small children and are lined with convenient restaurants and shops.
The popular beaches near Talmont are small cliff enclosed bays typically with calm waters and actvities for children as well as restaurants. The cliffs are lined with stilted shrimping piers and troglodyte caves.
Finally, at the end of the penninsula are the broad beaches of the Cote Sauvage. As the name suggests, these are more exposed and popular with surfers, backed by large sand dunes. You can visit the art nouveau light house for expansive views over the penninsula.
