Three roads make the winding 300-metre descent into Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne (pop. 120, altitude 367 m), set in a spectacular green valley surrounded by deep forest. Tranquil and timeless, this well-kept village is far from lifeless, especially in the summer season when it plays host to a gentle stream of ramblers, cyclists, climbers and cavers. There is a local cheese dairy, a restaurant, and plenty to explore on foot - most notably the source of the river Lison, which emerges from a cliff-face waterfall at the head of a wooded gorge just 15 minutes’ walk from the house. Supermarkets and other sophistication are a similar-length drive away, whichever direction you go. Burgundy, Switzerland, lakeside & ski resorts are all within easy motoring reach.

Location, location, location.: Nans is too far from any major town to be a dormitory village. Salins-les-Bains is 15 minutes’ drive away and offers a spa and other attractions, plus reasonable shopping facilities and a choice of restaurants. Heading north, the city of Besançon (45 minutes) has loads to see and do. To the west, Dijon and the Burgundy region are within easy motoring distance. Switzerland is an hour’s drive southeastwards via Pontarlier, which is also the gateway to tranquil Lac Saint-Point and the ski slopes around Métabief/Mont d’Or. The trendier resort of Les Russes is a similar distance away, in the direction of Geneva. For more activity and excursion suggestions, browse the folder with brochures and flyers kept at the house.

Get away from it all... and stay in the loop.: Bring a laptop or other WiFi-capable device and you'll have full internet access. Mobile phones: strong signal from Bouygues Telecom at the house, although the valley terrain makes for variable reception in and around the village.

A house for all seasons.: Double-glazed and centrally heated, indoors stays comfortable when the weather closes in - which it sometimes really can! There is a stash of logs for the fireplace, books in a variety of languages, puzzles, games, an upright piano... or bring your own favourite music on LP or CD for a '70s-retro stereo listening experience; DVDs look and sound quite good, too!

We have stayed at La Maison Suisse on three separate occassions now,each time for a week and we have only just scratched th surface of things to do in the area. The villa is all and more than it is described. It really is a home from home with everything you could possibly need. The area is simply stunning with loads to do for an outdoor adventure packed holiday or simply taking in the quiet charm of the surrounding countryside If the solitude gets too much Beasacon is only 45 mins away and the bright lights of Laussanne less than two hours, We will be back.

Jan is a welcoming and attentive host.

The accommodation is spacious, practical in its layout and well equipped – including impressive computing, TV and hi-fi facilities. The house is located on the edge of Nans-sous-Ste-Anne with panoramic views of the surrounding forested hills.

Nans is an attractive village in a beautiful setting. There is the historic, water-powered tool-making factory to visit, as well as the fromagerie which sells a range of good quality local produce. Just outside Nans is the stunning source of the river (Lison) which flows through the village and which provides several possibilities for pleasant local strolls. The restaurant of the Hotel de la Poste is recommended – especially for lunches.

The special feature of the village for walkers is its location on a network of good paths – including grandes randonnées – which give rise to an excellent variety of walks literally from the doorstep.

Further afield, Nans is within easy driving distance of several other villages which are well-worth visiting including Ornans, Arbois and Salins.

"La Maison Swiss"

Jan & Francesca have welcomed me and my friends on many occasions over the past two years.

We have stayed here both for holidays and for business, I import wines from the Jura region to the UK and have never been disapointed. The accomodation has all mod cons and is really a home from home with a great balcony and views.

The accomodation is ideally situated to discover the vineyards of Montigny-les-Arsures.

Arbois and Salins les Bains are reachable within a twenty minute drive. Besancon and Pontarlier are about forty minutes away.

The village of Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne is tranquil with plenty of walks around.

Hotel de la Poste is worth a stop early evening, enjoy a beer and watch the wildlife or just enjoy the view of the surrounding mountain.

A five minute drive up the mountain from this accomodation you will find the restaurant, Auberge du Pont du Diable, a fantastic traditional restaurant with outside seating in the summer months.

The village of Ornans is very close and well worth a visit; the cafe top of the central tree lined area offers a great lunch menu. You will also find the Museum of Gustave Courbet here too.

A great location, once you have visited here you will wonder why you had not discovered it before.
