Breathtakingly beautiful landscape: hill and mountains up to 2000 meters, woodland (pine, oak, beech), rocky gorges and sparkling streams alternate with vineyards, walnut groves, marigold, sunflower, thyme and lavender fields. Chapias is situated at the head of a small valley in a former mulberry orchard and has all round views on the mountains characterised by rocky buttresses face of the Vercors. A ramblers’ paradise A stone’s throw from Italy, Die (4500 inhabitants) was a Gallo-roman and medieval regional capital. It is situated on the River Drôme at an altitude of 400 meters. The property is organic and lowallergen. All gites open onto balconies, terraces or patios and combine indoor charm with outdoor accessibility. Natural and ecological building materials have been used to renovate the gites and that contributed greatly to the tasteful comfort and sense of harmony of their interiors.

In August 2005 we spent a week in one of the newly renovated modern gites run by Joelle and her family at Chapias near the small town of Die in the Drome. The gite is about 3kms down a track from the road and so the setting is secluded and peaceful. Only natural building materials have been used and recycling facilities are available on site. Our 2 boys aged 9 & 11 loved exploring the nearby hills woods and stream. Die has some good places to eat out and a couple of supermarkets to buy food. There are public swimming pools nearby but they require lycra swimsuits, no baggy trunks! Joelle has great suggestions about places to visit such as the stunning granite hilla at Cirque de Archiane. We also enjoyed canoeing and seeing waterfalls. There are hardly any British tourists in this area and it’s a good place to practice speaking French. The people we met were very friendly and we would definitely recommend it as a holiday destination. Suzanne and Chris Rowland. (Ask me for their Email).
