Restored semi-perchedwine Cotes-du-Rhone village house. Two floors with place for bikes in basement. Large authentic restored tiled kitchen with balcony includes reading-TV area beside. Two bedrooms on 2nd floor, one with double bed, the other with 3 single beds. Simple, sunny and authentic. Clean, cheerful, sunny and sweet. Easy to maintain. Located on outer edge of an exceptionally pretty village. Great base for hiking, biking, paragliding, wine tasting and outdoor activity. Region abounds with cultural and festival possibilities in nearby Avignon, Orange, Vaison-la-Romaine and Nyons.

Venterol is an exceptional semi-perched wine village in the Cotes-du-Rhone region of Provence between Nyons and Valreas in the Drome. Olive orchards bank the surrounding hills and brilliant lavender fields color the valley below. The village lies on the southern side of modest mountains bisected by fossil streams and hiking trails. Wild boar are occasionally seen on the back mountain lanes once used by the French Resistance. Venterol, as with so many neighboring villages in the High Drome, is surrounded by vineyards and wine tasting 'caveaux'. While one finds municipal pools in most regional villages, our nearby Nyons provides a very large state-of-the-art Swim Center for family fun and recreation. Close by streams and waterfalls provide additional picnic/swim opportunities. Mt Ventoux can be seen in the distance and many visiting bikers have made the trip to its summit from our house.

Venterol Described:

This protected Cotes-du-Rhone hillside wine village is in the Drome, on the edge Vaucluse. The modest mountains behind Venterol form a sort of climatic divide between the greener northern lDrome and the warm, sunny Midi climate of Vaucluse. Our village has its own small grocery and croissant/baguette baker, a terraced cafe and restaurant housed in the former elementary school. Dining on the terrace beside the square is a pleasant and beautiful experience... especially since one of Provence's finest wrought iron bell towers still rings the hours atop the church. Just as it done since the 18-19th Century when workers streamed in from the fields to tip a glass of pastis before going home to lunch...and there were 6 cafes! During the summer on Saturday morning a small market blooms on the main square. Farmers from the village and surrounding hamlets bring their produce, goat cheese, jams and jellies, pastry and wine to sell.

Our House

On the entry floor is a spacious kitchen with a sitting area to relax and read. The breakfast balcony looks out on a portion of the vineyard valley between Nyons and Valreas. The bath has a small sink, shower and toilet. It, like the kitchen floor, is newly tiled and lovely. A winding stair leads up to two bedrooms above. One is large with three single beds. The other is small and has a double bed. Both have large armoirs, chairs, one a radio, and both have hardwood floors/ceilings. Walls are white and the large room is very bright. In fact, the whole house is bright, clean, and easy to maintain. Furnishings are tastefully modest and authentic. Looking south, Vaison-la-Romaine, Orange and Avignon are only twenty minutes to an hour away. North of Venterol, one finds the greener, cooler climate of the High Drome (plenty of hiking, swimming, and outdoor activity.... including horseback riding, paragliding, and bike riding).

We are surrounded by many museums, both cultural and educational. Whether it is the astounding Museum of Silk Manufacture in Taulignan, the Olive Oil and Antique Motorcycle Museums in Nyons, or Donzere's Museum of Provence Life.....there are countless events, places and architectural gems to answer any one's appetite for discovery. Also Concerts galore...outdoor and in breathtakingly beautiful medieval cathedrals. We are long-time owners of this and another property in this exceptional village. We are happy to recommend unusual places to see and explore, sites you will not find in guidebooks, places we have come to know intimately after years of living in Venterol. If we are in town, we offer a welcoming first French breakfast to anyone renting for two weeks or more.
