Vendays-Montalivet is a pretty, typically French village, and provides for all basic needs, with three grocery shops, a pharmacy, a butcher, two bakeries, two bars, a pizzeria, a restaurant and a cave all within a five-minute walk of the house. Bigger supermarchés can be found in Lesparre, which is a 10 minute drive away from the house. 4 miles away lies the resort of Montalivet, a lively summer centre with a safe beach (lifeguards are on duty during the peak months), and one of the biggest daily markets in France. The market is made up of over 200 stalls selling products from the region and the rest of the world, and is particularly good for sampling the famous local oysters and wine as you watch the rest of the world go by. On the estuary-side of the Gironde peninsular, the Route des Chateaux is a must for wine lovers, as it passes through some of the world’s most famous vineyards, including Chateau Latour, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and Chateau Margaux.

Further details for this holiday house rental in Vendays Montalivet, France

Sun-seekers: With the Atlantic coast just four miles away, and stretching some 200 kilometres from Soulac-Sur-Mer at the top of the Gironde peninsular down to Biarritz near the Spanish border, what better way for families or friends to spend a day, enjoying relaxed fun and sunning on the golden sands of the uncrowded beaches nearby. For the explorers, there are plenty of opportunities to find your own deserted stretch of sand through the pine forests and off the beaten track. However, if you prefer to have amenities closer to hand, the resorts of Montalivet and Soulac-Sur-Mer are ideal, providing safe bathing as well as bars, restaurants and shops.

Action-packers: The Atlantic coast has long been a favourite with surfers, and it is no coincidence that Lacanau Plage, just a 20 minute drive down the coast, has regularly played host to World Pro surfing events and continues to be a surfer's paradise. Closer to home is the biggest freshwater lake in France, Hourtin Lac, which provides the perfect environment for water-sports enthusiasts of all levels (wind-surfing, kite-surfing,sailing) - equipment and lessons are available on site. The Cap 33 club in Montalivet also offers surfing and beach-buggying lessons for groups or individuals of all ages. Back on dry land, there is an impressive network of cycle paths around the area, comprehensively mapped out and well sign-posted, as well as walking, horse-riding, go-karting and a child-pleasing Adventure Forest for a view from the trees!

Food and Wine-lovers: As famous for its gastronomy as it is for its world-class wines, the Médoc must be one of the richest areas to be placed for food and wine lovers alike. Markets in surrounding towns and villages are great for finding local produce to try at home, and a good selection of restaurants near-by provide gourmet cuisine for very reasonable prices (a list of recommended eateries is available at the house). For some of the best food in the region, head for Montalivet market, where you can join the local residents enjoying fresh oysters, cheese and meats, all washed down with a glass or two of delicious médocain wine. To explore the vineyards further, drive to Lesparre and pick up the Route des Chateaux - a beautiful road winding through the vine-clad Gironde estuary past some of the most famous and impressive chateaux in the world. Enjoy a tour and some tasting at Chateau Margaux or simply stop en route at one of the many caves to try a delicious cross-section of locally produced wines.

Brilliant House

Review Submitted: May 9, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
The house was exactly as described and works extremely well as a space. There were six of us all around the age of 25 staying there and we had a great time. The owners are so friendly and helpful, and the home is light, bright, and spacious.

Its an amazing area with so much to do. We will have to go back there some time as a long weekend isn't nearly enough time. The house was perfect for us as we travelled around the area quite a lot and were able to get loads into our short time there by having a proper base. The pool was made use of after a long day on the beach, and we had a brilliant bbq in the evening. The outside space works great for chatting into the evenings.

Its a stunning part of the world and I can understand why you love it so
much, we were able to spend one day locally around the beaches and the next day we got to Bordeaux and Arcachon/the Pilat sand dune which was amazing. I think the dunes are a place everyone should see, truly stunning.

Thanks for a great holiday, which was made better by such a great home!

France here we come...

Review Submitted: August 25, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
This is an excellent house to put your feet up in and relax. The weather played the game for us and the children really enjoyed the peace and quiet and the pool was a highlight as with all of our France holidays.
The surrounding area gives you an endless supply of beaches varying from the ‘nature’ ones right through to the more intense public beaches which are strictly watched by very cautious lifeguards. Great for the adults who can relax a little more as their little ones swim in the endless water. The beaches up here are a little gentler and the waves are still good but not as punishing as the ones further south where they can be quite extreme.
The wine tasting possibilities are nearly endless and within 15 minutes drive of the house itself you will need to have a designated driver, because there are so many to choose from. The ones on the main road side of Vensac were excellent, friendly and there was no discussion of payment for the wine tasting either.
The markets are also great, but once you have done one or two of the main ones, you start to see some pattern to them and you can stay local to enjoy the local food etc. The food market on Thursday, again in Vensac proved a bit hit with the many different styles of food and wine. The live music gets better as the night rolls on and the sun goes down.
One small point which I have spoken to the owners about was the kitchen. No complaint though, as the kitchen is big and nice to work in and chat with the others at the same time, but it is missing some small, perhaps more mainland Europe accessories. A coffee machine and a mixer (for cakes, as we had two birthdays here) would be a big help. Also I was with some German people and even I have grown used to the coffee being available in quantities in the morning. Otherwise the kitchen is well equipped and I was amazed to find a good sharp knife, which is seldom in rental properties.
Again this property is more reason while we will return to France for holidays. The climate is great and the food and cultural experience is great. Cheers.

Great Holiday

Review Submitted: August 8, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
Beautiful, clean, well maintained, modern house exactly as described and as shown in the photos. Very comfortable and well equipped and felt like home.Excellent pool, large garden, shady parking and you can have a great game of boules on the drive.Owners were very friendly and helpful.Good surfing and body-boarding beaches 10-15 mins away. We went to Le Gurp mostly and the beach is a very short walk from the car park and is never over-crowded.Lots of opportunities for wine-tasting but most have to be booked.Would thoroughly recommend this house.

Superb Holiday

Review Submitted: February 15, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2009
Lucy was the only owner who welcomed us during our initial internet search for a French holiday home. Something about an American family with 7 children might have put some folks off. She said the house would work well for us and she was right. This home accomodated us without issue and would do so for 8 adults as well. We hope to return someday with adult friends to enjoy this home and the surrounding area. We split our time between the beach, the pool, and tasting wine. Tough life. The home was very clean and well appointed. The pool was very enjoyable and a real highlight for the children. I recommend this home and these owners without hesitation. Many thanks for a very memorable holiday experience. "

Review Submitted: August 31, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
What an incredible holiday in an incredible house in an incredible area of France. We arrived and found we were able to share someone's home and we felt very much 'at home; the minute we walked in. Personal photo's of the owners were on the walls, personal bits and pieces were dotted around - it was a home and had that sense of a much loved place which was transmitted to us, The whole experience was one of the best.
As a temporary wheelchair user I was impressed with the accessibility and home for me. I was able to be independent as well as being involved with everyone. The home is spotless and everything needed is to hand - we are still confused about what colour bin goes out on what day and what each bin should have in it - but hey thats holiday challenge! The area is very beautiful and the Atlantic coast such a wonderful place to be - the youngest in our party spent much time digging a huge hole in the sand (why? who knows!) whilst the more adventurous went sufing in the fantastic seas. WE WILL RETURN!!!
I can only recomend the home, the area, the food and of course the wine which was well sampled and well received by all. Thnaks to you for allowing us to share and be part of your family for two weeks and share your home.
