Chateau des Etoyeres is set in 15 acres of ancient forest and parkland. The Estate consists of a gate house, chapel, bread oven, coach house and the chateau itself. The Chateau dates back to 1460 and was originally a fortified residence with a moat. The Coach House is a well renovated, spaceous, tastefully furnished building, with its own garden and use of the heated outdoor swimming pool. It was fully-refurbished in 2005 to a high specification. It has a rustic 'french' feel. The salon has a wonderful huge fireplace with logs to burn on a cool evening. It is situated away from the main Chateau and has its own garden and BBQ. We provide kayaks for use on our river, a table-tennis table, bicycles and fishing rods. There's plenty to do, apart from just relaxing, and many activities nearby; golf, cycling and walking paths, go-carting, horse-riding, not to mention the Le Mans race track. The property is managed by a caretaker who lives locally.

Chateau des Etoyeres is 0.5km from St Cenere and 3 kms from the pretty town of Montsurs, which has plenty of boulangeries, boucheries and supermarkets. It is boarded by the River Jouanne, a tributery of the Mayenne. The Chateau estate is situated between Mayenne and Laval. This is an excellant area for cycling and fishing. Laval provides many activities, including an 8 screen cinema, go-carting, badminton, tennis, etc. It is a beautiful medieval city with a castle and museum. Other historic and unusual places of interest to visit in the Mayenne are, St Suzanne, a medieval town which hosts medieval re-enactments and other festivities, and Domfront, an ancient walled fortress town. A little further is the imposing Mont St Michel, a picturesque walled town on a rock connected to the mainland by a causeway. And Paris is 1 1/2 hours away by train!

Notes: We have a table tennis room, 3 kayaks for use on our river, and fishing rods. We have bicycles for your use, too. We also have our own wood to explore, where we have seen deer, hares and salamanders! It is a perfect get-away from it all haven - great for fishing, drawing/painting, walking, cycling, kayaking and of course swimming! Our outdoor pool is heated through the summer, May to September, and is 40 x 20 feet. Although linen and towels are provided, swimming towels would be an extra nominal charge.

Relaxing and beautiful Coach house and grounds

We had from a wonderful 2 week stay at the coach house in August. All 3 generations loved it, including our 3 young boys.

The booking process was easy and the owner friendly and very helpful with directions etc

On arrival we were greeted by the house keeper who ran us through all we needed to know and urged us to call if we needed anything. We met her husband later in the week who was also really helpful and accommodating.

The coach house is tastefully decorated and comfortable. I agree with the other reviews that the kitchen is a little on the small side for the size of the property and would definitely benefit from a larger fridge, however we made do. Due to some great weather we had the bbq going as often as we could.

We found the locals charming; they loved practicing their English with us in the shops in Montsurs.

The swimming pool is lovely. The boys - aged from 8 months up to 6 years - just loved it and would happily have stayed in there for the entire 2 weeks!

In the evening we could sit in the grounds looking at the amazing stars and watching bats fly around us.

The majestic chateau and its estate are set in the most beautiful and tranquil surroundings. We were hooked by its charm we have booked to return next year and are counting the days until we return!

The Coach House July 2008

We were two families with three children. The grounds were large and peaceful, and we enjoyed walking in the woods, canoeing and fishing, although disappointed that there were no fishing rods and we had to buy our own. The pool is a good size and clean and warm. The facilities of the Coach House were fine, the main reception room a very good size and the fire well worth a light on a cool evening. The kitchen is slightly on the small size for a property of this size and the fridge could benefit from being larger to store food for 8 people. The rear garden is an evening sun trap allowing for extended outside dining, although the plants in the pots have suffered with no watering.
Montsurs, 5 minutes in the car provided shops for food, although we did our main shopping in the Carrefour in Laval (worth a visit). We visited Laval and Mayenne both recommended.
A good holiday location and we would recommend it to others and use it again.

The grounds were stunning and we deeply enjoyed the peace and quiet of the house and surrounding area. Our kids loved the ping-pong table and the swimming pool. We didn't get a chance to go on the river, but would have done so had we had more time. The bedrooms were very comfortable, although the small bedroom upstairs lacked air and needed to be kept open. The stairs to the second floor were a bit challenging at first, but we soon got used to them. We enjoyed the large family room with the big dining room table, and enjoyed the outdoor furniture very much. The kitchen was a bit small, making it difficult for many of us to be in there at the same time. The refrigerator was smaller than we had expected, but functional. All in all, a great holiday location.
