Bars and Restaurants:
: Montmorillon offers a fine selection of traditional bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. A five minute walk from the house takes you to the centre of town where most of these are located. The Hotel de France offers superb dining and is a training restaurant for young chefs cooking up excellent cuisine at reasonable prices. The Roman de Saveurs is another fine restaurant built on the banks of the river Gartempe and was once the ancient prison of the town. This restaurant is a mere two minute walk from the house and is an ideal spot to enjoy lunch and watch the river flow.
Shopping:
: Montmorillon has a weekly market in the centre of town selling local produce and wares. The town has 4 large supermarkets, numerous small speciality shops and all other amenities associated with a regional centre. The city of Poitiers is only a 30 minute drive where you will find a large pedestrianised shopping district of cobbled streets and streetside cafés. Most surrounding towns have their own weekly markets, in particular, the market at Les Herrolles (20 mins away) is held on the 29th of each month and is the largest regional market attracting thousands of visitors.
Leisure & Areas of special interest:
: Montmorillon has an excellent swimming pool offering indoor facilities all year round and the added benefit of an outdoor pool with sun loungers and sunbathing area during the months of July and August. Around the area you will find other historical towns such as Saint Savin, which is a World Heritage Site for its unique church frescos. The medieval town of Chauvigny is a mere 15 minutes drive away where you can tour the ramparts and watch its outstanding giant eagle display. The Brenne National Park is a haven for birds and wildlife and Romagne to the south has an excellent monkey sanctuary to delight young and old alike. The Parc Futuroscope at Poitiers is the second largest visitor attraction in France, whilst the martyred village of Oradour Sur Glane, preserved since World War II, is also a worthy visit. The next town of Lathus is the home of an outdoor activity centre based on the river and hosts a number of water sports and many other outdoor pursuits.
