It's impossible to take a decent photo of this lovely town house because its front accesses a small lane and the back is set into the side of a hill which overlooks the town of Montmorillon. Our house is literally a stones throw from the ancient area and the medieval bridge featured above. This area is simply gorgeous; its winding cobbled streets lead you to speciality shops, galleries, bars and bistros on route to the magnificent church of Notre Dame from where you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views of the whole town. The food is wonderful and ranges from pancakes alfresco to the finest of a la carte dining. The house itself is on three floors and includes two double and one twin bedroom. The attic room is particularly spacious and offers private access to the top terrace and the town. Our favourite space is the middle terrace which is totally private and its dappled shade creates a great space for barbeques and sunbathing. We've equipped it well for up to six people of all ages.

The location of the house in the heart of Montmorillon with its excellent facilities allows the visitor a chance to explore this wonderful region all year round. Montmorillon is situated at the South East corner of the Poitou Charente region within the Vienne Valley, 30 miles south east of Poitiers and 40 miles north of Limoges. Both have airports conveniently serviced on daily Ryanair flights from Stansted.Classified as a town of both art and history, Montmorillon has distinctive architecture, including a gothic bridge, timbered buildings, a 12th century funeral chapel and the 10th century church of Notre Dame. The river Gartempe flows through the town and the river Vienne is not far away both providing many fishing and other leisure pursuit opportunities. The Vienne Valley has miles and miles of marked trails through unspoilt countryside for those on foot, horseback or bike, many of which start (and end) within 2 mins of the house.

  • Peak bookings are Saturday (after 4pm) arrival to Saturday (by 10am) departure.
  • Part-week rentals during off-peak season are negotiable subject to availability.

Bars and Restaurants: : Montmorillon offers a fine selection of traditional bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. A five minute walk from the house takes you to the centre of town where most of these are located. The Hotel de France offers superb dining and is a training restaurant for young chefs cooking up excellent cuisine at reasonable prices. The Roman de Saveurs is another fine restaurant built on the banks of the river Gartempe and was once the ancient prison of the town. This restaurant is a mere two minute walk from the house and is an ideal spot to enjoy lunch and watch the river flow.

Shopping: : Montmorillon has a weekly market in the centre of town selling local produce and wares. The town has 4 large supermarkets, numerous small speciality shops and all other amenities associated with a regional centre. The city of Poitiers is only a 30 minute drive where you will find a large pedestrianised shopping district of cobbled streets and streetside cafés. Most surrounding towns have their own weekly markets, in particular, the market at Les Herrolles (20 mins away) is held on the 29th of each month and is the largest regional market attracting thousands of visitors.

Leisure & Areas of special interest: : Montmorillon has an excellent swimming pool offering indoor facilities all year round and the added benefit of an outdoor pool with sun loungers and sunbathing area during the months of July and August. Around the area you will find other historical towns such as Saint Savin, which is a World Heritage Site for its unique church frescos. The medieval town of Chauvigny is a mere 15 minutes drive away where you can tour the ramparts and watch its outstanding giant eagle display. The Brenne National Park is a haven for birds and wildlife and Romagne to the south has an excellent monkey sanctuary to delight young and old alike. The Parc Futuroscope at Poitiers is the second largest visitor attraction in France, whilst the martyred village of Oradour Sur Glane, preserved since World War II, is also a worthy visit. The next town of Lathus is the home of an outdoor activity centre based on the river and hosts a number of water sports and many other outdoor pursuits.
