Elegant stone house in Charente Maritime,very well equipped, large garden, pool

Maison Brives is a wonderful former presbytery, built in 1830 during the reign of Napoleon the 2nd. Sleeping up to 6 people in three double en suite bedrooms it makes the perfect, 'tout confort', French holiday retreat.

Antique furniture, rugs on the floor, terracotta tiles and a large garden - all these conspire to offer the visitor a warm and inviting French country house experience. A stay at Maison Brives is a chance to re-charge the batteries in a period home full of charm. The salt pool (5M x 8M) is surrounded by south facing lounging area shady garden with barbeque and fantastic views over undulating countryside. The salon has a stone carved chiminee, TV (english and french) HiFi, a piano, DVD and lots of games. Double doors lead to the elegant dining room or one can eat on the 40' stone terrace and see the amazing sunsets. The three large bedrooms all have at least a shower, loo and washbasin and the master bedroom has a Victorian bath. The country kitchen has all mod cons.

Brives-sur-Charentes is a quiet village of some 200 people located between Saintes and Cognac, deep in vineyard country above the Charentes River. Though it has just a post-office and traditional local Mairie, visitors to Maison Brives take advantage of a visiting van from a local bakers drop off croissants before 10 each morning. A similar service exists for meat and fish (on Fridays) van almost daily. For more extensive shopping there are supermarkets like Carrefour are in easy striking distance for those with a car (rental from Saintes). Despite (or perhaps because of) its small size, Brives has a vibrant local community. From art classes to its bridge club, the village is overflowing with traditional French character.

    For Summer letting: A 20% deposit is required to confirm the booking, the balance to be paid in GBP or euros by bank transfer (preferably Nationwide) or cheque to clear at least six weeks before arrival A further returnable security deposit (cheque) of £300 is required with the final balance. In high season (July and August) reservations are taken on a Saturday to Saturday basis but variations may be requested in lower seasons.

Notes: The swimming pool is a salt water pool and solar heated so the heat depends somewhat on the weather! The house and grounds are not suitable for small children (antiques stone terrace, carpets, wooden stairs) but babies under a year old and children over 8 are very welcome as are well behaved pets. The pool is alarmed but not fenced.
