The Aravis range of mountains is on the western edge of the alps, which accounts for the good snow record as the snow arrives here first! Originally part of the Dukedom of Savoy, the area was joined to France in the 19th century. The area has a number of interesting Chateau, historic towns and villages, including Annecy, Yvoire and Conflins. Close by is the stunning lake Annecy, reputed to be the cleanest lake in Europe. A one hour drive will take you to Chamonix and the highest mountain in Western Europe. There are a number of trips here, not least to the Aguille du Midi by cable car, taking you to 3900 metres on the shoulder of Mont Blanc.
