Skiing:
Skiing in Les Houches, against the stunning backdrop of Mont Blanc, is wonderfully varied, ranging from plenty of green, blue and red runs, ideal for beginners and intermediates, right through to black runs - the most famous of these is rather misleadingly named 'La Verte du Kandahar',where the men's World Cup downhill race is staged every year - & where the French Olympic Ski Team practice. It also has its own new fast ski lifts!
Les Houches is also an ideal base for skiing some of the 700 kms covered on the Mont Blanc Pass, including Le Brevent, La Flegere, Le Tour and Argentiere as well as the black-run challenges of Les Grande Montets. You can also ski in Italy, at Courmayeur, only 15 kms away via the nearby Mont Blanc Tunnel.
There are also several other ski areas, including St. Gervais, Megeve and Les Contamines, for example, about 45 minutes away, making it possible to ski in different places every day, if you wanted to.
