Well over 100 years ago the wealthier residents in Dresden built homes in the style of the Jugendstil (William Morris in England). In the Striesen quarter sumptuous and impressive houses were built at that time. Now they are listed as important and preserved for Heritage purposes. To stay in this residential accommodation for any period of time gives one the feeling of living in the historical past. To stay in the Bollig-House in Dresden-Striesen is a special experience as it is a faithfully rebuilt 19th-century-style-house and offers modern comforts.

Dresden on the river Elbe: In former days Dresden was known as 'Florence on the Elbe'. There are various castles along the river Elbe as well as bridges of stone and iron. Already in 1893 a blue coloured iron bridge was described as 'The Blue Wonder', as it was a unique construction in those years. Taking the riverboats sailing upstream the visitor is offered the opportunity to explore the nearby regions known as the Swiss Saxony.

Frauenkirche and Semper-Opera-House: The Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady, German Baroque 1725/38) virtually destroyed in 1945 is perfectly restored. The famous Semper-Opera-House, the Taschenberg Palace an the Zwinger (Group of Arcadian Galleries 1711/22) are all world famous.

Comfortable apt., nice neighborhood

A nice, cozy apartment in the beautiful Striesen neighborhood, a 3-minute walk to the #4 and #10 trams and then just a 10-15 minute ride to the city center. The apartment was very comfortable. Since Dresden doesn't get to many English-speaking tourists, I don't think the rental's owner could anticipate our needs. For example, the person who met us to give us the key didn't speak a word of English (luckily our German friend helped us with the details). There were no instructions about handling the trash and what was expected of us regarding replenishing the kitchen supplies (although we found a list of items in the cupboard -- in German). Striesen is a great neighborhood with grocery store and bakery within a few minutes of the apartment, as well as a couple of decent restaurants just a few steps away.
