Chania, Villa Maro's for 2 with pool
Large wrought iron gates welcome you to this veritable garden of Eden, screened by high hedges from the only neighbouring house and just beyond the walnut and shady lemon trees, stands the little house itself, oozing tranquillity. The spacious open plan living room has fitted sofas and at the far end, the immaculate kitchenette has a large fridge freezer, full electric cooker and dining table and chairs. The small double bedroom has a well-appointed ensuite bathroom, finished with blue and white tiles. The rear courtyard is a veritable suntrap with juxtaposed on the far side, an elaborate barbecue house and an equally flamboyant 7m x 5m pool. Beyond the house, a flower bordered path stretches some 80 metres to the start of the orange groves. Stone tables and benches are located in shady spots around the garden beneath the pomegranates and kumquat trees. Yianni, the owner calls by every few days to feed the keeps rabbits, chickens and ducks kept in separate outhouses .

Screened by high hedges
from the only neighbouring house, large wrought iron gates flanked by palm trees welcome you, whilst just inside the gateway is a trellis of vines where your car can park comfortably out of the sun. A few metres further and beyond the walnut tree and shady lemon trees, stands the little house itself, simply oozing tranquillity. The spacious open plan living room has a cosy sitting area in one corner with fitted sofas and coffee table plus meticulously crafted wooden shelving, prettily decorated with Cretan artifacts in keeping with the simple, aesthetic style of the house. At the far end of the room, the immaculate kitchenette has a large fridge freezer along with a full electric cooker, whilst nearby is a dining table and chairs and an open fireplace where logs crackle merrily on a coolish evening. Off the living room, the small double bedroom has a well-appointed ensuite bathroom, attractively finished with blue and white wall tiles.
The cloistered rear courtyard
is a veritable suntrap and has stairs up to the roof terrace with a shady grape arbour and astounding panoramic views across miles of open countryside, where orange and olive groves stretch to the distant phantom blue hills. Beyond the house a flower bordered path stretches some 80 metres to the start of the orange groves and is covered much of the way, by an amazing arbour of kiwi fruit. On either side of the path are yet further fruit trees, including pomegranates and kumquats as well as oranges and lemons and various species unknown. Stone tables and benches are located in shady spots around the garden. An elaborate BBQ and equally flamboyant 7m x 5m pool are extravagant additions to this erstwhile simple house.
Apart from fruit trees
Yiannis, the owner keeps rabbits and chickens in separate outhouses in the garden and there are also some itinerant ducks who wander off into the orange groves during the day and return at night to boast to the chickens of their exploits. The rabbits, we hear, are particularly fond of soft sentimental music, so if you have a good voice, do give them a treat occasionally, we promise they will listen with rapt attention! Finally, if you happen to be there around late September, Yiannis has asked us to mention that he uses the roof terrace to tread the grapes from his local vineyard. The whole family lends a hand and the operation takes most of one day, usually culminating with a celebratory party complete with local delicacies cooked on the huge barbecue and/or authentic Cretan oven that Yiannis has constructed in the garden. A 7m x 5m pool is an equally flamboyant additional extravagance recently added to this erstwhile simple house.

Comments from Owner Guestbook
Maro's Spitaki
This was our second stay at Maro's and it is the perfect getaway from it all destination. Despite temperatures being in the high 30s the house always stays cool. The roof sun terrace is the perfect spot to spend the day with some grapevines appropriately placed to provide some much needed shade. The highlight for me is the garden. The only fruit which were ripe were the oranges but later in the season you can enjoy kiwis, plums etc. etc. Having freshly squeezed orange juice and eggs freshly laid (for a townie, collecting eggs straight from the hens was a new experience) is a breakfast to remember. The geese, chickens and rabbits are all friendly! A car is essential but it is easy to catch a bus from the main road to Chania and take a taxi back (about 10mins). Highly recommended.
