Crete, Chania, Villa Stefanos with Pool
Situated in the hamlet of Pirgos, 16 km west of Chania and just over 1 km from the centre of Maleme, this handsome old family house with 10m x 5m private swimming pool is set amongst olive groves, some 500 metres from the coast road, off the small country lane that leads to the village of Xamoudohori. The house is built on two levels and terraced out of the hillside and still contains some of the original vaulted timber ceilings, complimented by newly laid wooden floors and the use of gorgeous, soft creamy marble in the shower rooms. The main entrance door on the upper level leads into a beautifully fitted kitchen with full cooker, microwave, dishwasher and fridge-freezer, cupboards and ample work surfaces. To one side there’s a large dining table and beyond here an archway leads through to an attractive and comfortably furnished sitting room with a generous sweep of windows on two sides providing wonderful sea view.

14 km west of Chania in this very fertile corner of Crete, the countryside is dominated by sweet smelling orange groves and whispering plantations of tall bamboo which fringe the mile upon mile of almost deserted beaches. Sandy stretches alternate with very peaceful pebbly stretches, with the occasional rocky outcrop punctuating the otherwise endless sweep of the sea. Maleme has a good selection of tavernas as well as a butcher, baker and largish supermarket. The nearby beaches are mostly pebbly but Villa Stefanos makes an ideal base to explore the rugged west coast of Crete, well endowed with fabulous sandy beaches and magnificent scenery. Gerani some 2 km away has a good choice of tavernas and a number of small mini-markets, but for a little more action the bustling village of Platanyas is just under 4km away

| Notes: | N.B. The sleeping area in the studio is immediately below the master bedroom whose wood floors offer nothing in the way of noise insulation in either direction! The pool has a depth of 1.40 metres at the shallow end and 2 metres at the deep end and is not suitable for non-swimmers. All rooms have air conditioning/heating and the cost is payable locally. The villa has two telephones for incoming calls and free local calls. Cost of internet use tba. Both of the sofas in the sitting room convert into single beds. |
The Owner Stefanos
Has been renovating the house for some years with the help of a close friend who is an architect and interior designer. The work has gone slowly as his friend's inspired ideas have not always proved practical. Nevertheless the final result is an interesting compromise with perhaps a touch more style and quirkiness than you would normally expect to find in a holiday villa that for starters, has 3 bedrooms and 4 shower rooms! The house is built on two levels and terraced out of the hillside and still contains the original vaulted timbered ceilings, complimented by newly laid wooden floors and the use of huge slabs of gorgeous, soft creamy marble in the numerous shower rooms.
The Main Entrance
Door on the upper level leads into a beautifully fitted kitchen with full cooker, dishwasher and fridge-freezer, as well cupboards and ample work surfaces with a creamy marble splash back. To one side there's a large dining table and beyond here a door leads through to an attractive and comfortably furnished sitting room with generous sweep of windows on two sides providing wonderful sea views, over the olive groves and the village of Maleme, to the distant Rodopou Peninsula. The double-bedded master bedroom is situated off the sitting room, enjoying similar sea views, it has a large fitted wardrobe as well as the unusual benefit of two shower rooms, both containing a WC and wash hand basin! Also on this level, off the kitchen, is a further small bunk bedded room with a large chest of drawers and its own tiny en-suite shower room with WC and wash hand basin.
Situated at the lower level
And with its own separate entrance door is a studio, complete with two sofa beds as well as a shower room and a washing machine. To the front is a small sitting area, plus a wardrobe and desk unit, complete with computer and internet facilities for those folk who like to swim by day and surf by night! Outside, apart from the usual patio furniture, sunbeds and umbrellas, Villa Stefanos is a sea of green with terraced lawns sloping down to the stylish wood decking surrounding the pool with just the occasional token stepping stone and a solitary palm tree. This minimalist approach extends to the garden terraces, which have no fences or guardrails but do have unprotected drops of up to 1.5 metres! In the circumstances we are duty bound to say that the house is not suitable for the elderly or infirm, or young children and particular care should be taken at night

Loved Villa Stefanos. Pool great and very clean. It's in a nice quiet location, only a 5-20 min walk to various taverna's (depending which you choose). I particularly liked 'East of Eden'. Locals very friendly. I just didn't want to leave!!
