The coastline is perfect for walking, especially if you take swimming gear, but for more strenuous outings, the mountains and dramatic landscapes of the Smaria Gorge are never far.

Gavalochori is just over 3km from Almirida. The village is an old fishing village, steeped in history and set on one of the finest beaches in Chania. Walks along the coast from Almirida are excellent, as the coastline is inundated with caves and rocky spurs. There are also a great range of historical attractions in and around the village, as well as some of the finest seafront restaurants you can find.

Summers in Gavalochori are long and hot. Temperatures can be almost guaranteed to reach into the mid 30’s (˚C) during June, July and August, with maximum temperatures peaking at around 36˚C most summers. The sea remains warm enough to swim in for the vast majority of the year too, especially if you are hardy enough to swim off the coast of England during the summer.
