There are some beautiful beaches on these islands making them ideal destinations for sunbathing and swimming in the Aegean Sea. The largest island, Rhodes is very popular with families and is also an excellent spot for wind surfing, cat sailing, jet and water skiing, canoeing and sea cycling amongst other things. The best way to get around the islands and along the coast of the Greek mainland is to charter one of the many private yacht and sailing companies, skipper-owners, flotillas and cabin cruises.

Golfers can head to Rhodes, which has an 18-hole par 73 course and there are numerous mini-golf courses here and on Kos. Fishing is very popular as you would expect on island resorts with some nice quiet fishing villages located on Kos. The resort of Faliraki on Rhodes boasts the largest waterpark in Europe with slides, wave machines and a pirate ship among its many features.

There are a number of Greek taverns, bars, cafes and restaurants on the main islands serving traditional Greek fare and plenty of fish. Self catering holidaymakers will be able to purchase food and beverages from mini markets, especially on the bigger islands of Rhodes and Kos. There are quaint little stores on many of the islands but the main area for shopping is Rhodes, where visitors will find many souvenirs as well as jewellery and leather goods.

There are a number of interesting places to visit in the region including historic buildings and churches such as the ancient ruins on Rhodes and the Acropolis of Lindos. There are trips available to other islands in the Southern Sporades with Patmos, Leros and Simi amongst the most fascinating and attractive of the 30 plus islands. Many of the islands have ferry or other boat services to the Greek mainland where there are many fantastic ancient temples and significant buildings. Athens boasts the iconic Acropolis, which overlooks the city from the top of the Parthenon.

Weather in Southern Sporades, Greece

Summers in the Southern Sporades are hot and dry with the average high in July and August about 31 degrees centigrade, but even June and September can average 28 centigrade. In fact temperatures can hit the high 30s in July and August when this hardly any rain either. The winter months are wet with January averaging around 148mm of rain. While January and February are cooler the temperatures rarely drop into single figures.
