In antiquity Skala Eressos was an important commercial centre.
It was famous and historical place as being the birth place of the poetess Sappho, the home of the Theophrastus, an ancient philosopher and botanist, and also the home of the philosopher Phanias, who was a student of the famous Aristotele. There are many restaurants and bars around the area, most of them with their own terraces near the beach and their individual decoration. They offer a large variety of fishes from all over the world, such as Italian, Chinese, American style breakfast, vegetarian and they create a really pleasant, enjoyable and relaxing ambiance. The village is a vivid place with cultural events happening during the summer. There is a small harbour of fishing boats that operates as a supplement of fresh fishes for the village about 200 m away from Villa La Passione.
