Mani Tower house in great walking country

Set amid olive trees, the house is a stone tower house, newly built in the traditional Mani style, but with all modern conveniences. The bedrooms are downstairs so they benefit from the cooler air in summer, and the bathroom and separate WC are also on the ground floor. The sitting room has French doors which open onto the balcony, which has a barbecue and super views to the sea and along the coast to Agios Nikolaos and Agios Dimitrios. The kitchen is small (but perfectly formed!) with fridge, sink, electric cooker and washer/dryer. It is fully equipped with crockery, cutlery, glassware, linen, electric kettle and toaster. The sitting/dining room has an open fireplace and electric radiator for the winter months. There is a double sofa bed which can sleep an additional person if required, and the dining table seats six. The master bedroom has a double bed and fitted wardrobes & the second bedroom has twin beds and freestanding wardrobe. French doors lead to the patio and garden.

The house is 10 min stroll from Pantazi beach, a sandy beach fringed and shaded by tamarisk trees, which has a beach bar in summer and a taverna all year. Pantazi is in between the village of Agios Dimitrios and the picturesque fishing village of Agios Nikolaos, which has several supermarkets, tavernas & bars, a post office, pharmacy and clinic. The Taigetos Mountains run down the spine of the Mani peninsula, and there are many delightful walks in the area, from easy and flat to demanding and strenuous - all amidst wonderful scenery. Olympia is about 3 hours drive away, Monemvassia about 2.5 hours and the ruined Byzantine city of Mystras is within 2 hours drive. There are numerous charter flights into Kalamata on Sundays (May to October), and scheduled flights (Inc. Easyjet) into Athens from where it is a pleasant 4.5 hours drive through spectacular scenery. We can organise a taxi or hire car to meet you at Kalamata, or provide route information from Athens if you drive from there.

  • The modern bathroom is provided with a white full length bath and washbasin. There is a shower fitting over the bath with a folding glass shower screen, and a mirrored double bathroom cabinet is situated over the washbasin. There is a separate cloakroom, with toilet and washbasin, and a mirrored double bathroom cabinet over the washbasin. Both bathroom and cloakroom are situated on the ground floor, near to the bedrooms. In both the bathroom and cloakroom the walls are tiled in white, with beige floor tiles and there is an electric heated towel rail in the bathroom as well as an ordinary towel rail. Hand towels and bath towels are provided, but you will need to bring your own beach towels.

  • 1 double, 1 twin Each bedroom has french doors which open onto the arched terrace and garden. The double bedroom has fitted wardrobes, bedside table and a ceiling fan. The twin bedded room has a free-standing wardrobe, 2 bedside tables, and a ceiling fan. In the summer season, sheets and light cotton bedspreads are provided and both bedrooms have duvets and electric radiators for the winter months. There is also a futon sofa bed in the sitting room which can accommodate one person, but this is not in privacy, so is perhaps more suitable for children. We also have a folding cot which is suitable for children up to age 3, and which can be installed in either the bedroom with the double bed or the two singles.

Notes:

No TV, but several tavernas have wide-screen TVs which often screen sports events such as international football matches - ask us for information! Arrival/changeover day is normally Saturday, but depending on availability we may be able to vary this. If you fly into Athens, we can send you detailed instructions from the airport to Agios Nikolaos, where we will meet you and conduct you to the house. Maid service is provided once a week, more often by arrangement. The property sleeps 4 in privacy, an additional person on the sofa bed in the sitting room. There are several flights of stairs in the property, so would only be suitable for active elderly (definition?) people, and children will need supervision on the balcony and roof, which have fairly low parapets. However, we have installed a gate at the bottom of the staircase to the roof, and the door to the roof can be padlocked.

Local Amenities and typical costs

Fortunately, this immediate area has not been affected by the forest fires which have afflicted other parts of the Peloponnese. There are several good tavernas nearby - Kalliope's near Pantazi beach, Zacharoula's which is a 5 minute walk from the house and various others in Agios Nikolaos and Stoupa, details of which we provide for you in the house. It is still much cheaper to eat out in Greece than in the UK e.g. a dinner for two including local wine will only cost between 25 and 30 Euros, and a Mythos (Greek and very good quality) beer is only 2 Euros for half a litre. For sun worshippers - a day's hire for 2 sunbeds and a sun umbrella costs about 7 Euros.
