Further details for this holiday villa rental in Palaiokastritsa, Greece

Around Paleocastritsa: The villas are situated in a quiet olive grove above the road on a cliff edge, 5 mins walk from the beaches and small supermarkets. The Oddyseus Hotel (a small family taverna) just below us offers our guests free use of their swimming pool and other facilities (2 mins walk). They host a Greek dancing night every week. From the door of Villa Nola you can walk (45mins) on a very old Byzantium pathway up the mountain to the village of Lakones. The views are amazing over the blue Ionian sea to the Albanian mountains on a clear day. There are tavernas and the famous Bella Vista cafe and viewpoint. The scenes are breath taking. There are many small picturesque, interesting villages within a few kilometres drive where you can experience the Greek village life at first hand and visit their churches/museums. There is a bus that runs every 30 minutes from Paleocastritsa to Corfu town in the summer. Corfu town is 25 kms away. The Delfini taverna below Villa Nola is perfect for meals and a swim.

Corfu Town : Kerkyra ( known as Corfu) The café at the Liston was built by the French in 18th century. The Palace of St. Michael and St. George to the left of the Liston, was built by the British and used as the official residence of the Governor. Prince Philip was born there.St. Spiridon's Church, home to the island's patron 'mummified' saint, is just behind the Liston. The church is impressive and worth visiting, but ensure you are suitably dressed. During the summer there are nightly musical performances of Sound & Light. (The second world war British hospital at the centre of the fort has now been turned into a music school.) The fort is worth a visit during the day. Facing the Liston Esplanade is the Old Fort which was built between the 6th & 19th centuries. The narrow streets radiating off from the Liston, house small shops, churches old mansions, museums or a secret garden. Shopping in all the small shops is a delight and eating at the small tavernas.Wireless Internet at the Villas.

Greek Way of Life, Flora and Fauna : Timing. Greeks do not expect quick service and often frown upon food that is too hot! Waiters will not rush you and will rarely deliver food in the same order as it was placed. Dishes sometimes arrive as and when they are ready - just sit back and relax and you will soon adjust to the Greek way of life! Corfu is small enough to be friendly and large enough to provide you with a never ending change of scenic beauty. And it is never difficult to get from one part of this island paradise to another. Drive around Corfu you can discover the magnificently scenic East coast to the equally impressive, more rugged and quieter West coast. The drives are picturesque, past quaint little villas and thousands of olive trees. The roads aren't crowded, except around the town centre for despite its centuries of history and its splendid beaches and sunlit bays, Corfu remains unspoilt. The olive groves at Villa Nola are 2,000 years old. NEW ADDITION for Villa Nola 72 sq metre patio with stunning sea views

Golf:

10 kms away, just 15 mins drive from from Villa Nola,Paleocastritsa is The Corfu Golf Club. This beautiful course has been praised by many as one of the best kept in Europe. It was designed by the famous Swiss based architect, Donald Harradine and he has blended the natural resources of the lovely Ropa Valley with man made hazards to make the course a good but fair test. It is as enjoyable for the scratch player as it is for the long handicap one. The course is open 7 days a week. The attractive looking clubhouse built of local stone is not only impressive outside, it is comfortable and luxurious inside. There is a bar, a lounge with pool table and games, and a bright, cheerful restaurant where appetizing meals are served at reasonable prices. There are locker rooms, shower and changing facilities. The professionals shop is well stocked with items of golf equipment and golf bags and golf clubs can be hired. The practice ground is particularly large and buckets of balls can be supplied to those wishing to indulge in serious practice. In front of the clubhouse there is a putting green. The professional staff are on hand at all times to give lessons and to make all visitors feel very welcome making sure they thoroughly enjoy their Corfu Golfing Holidays and all that the beautiful island has to offer.

Other Activities:

Boats for rent. Large Aqua park 10 kms. 18 hole golf course 10 kms.

Perfect holiday

Review Submitted: July 11, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
Dear Jane,

we're so happy that we found your villa. It was a good feeling from the beginning that i always got quick answers from you, for all my questions.
As we arrived to the villa, we know, that was a good choice. Beautiful garden, nice, clean villa, well-equipped kitchen. Paleokastritsa is also fantastic! Our little son loved having holiday there too! We could do whatever we wished, just lying on the beach, going out by car, walking, sleeping!

We wish to return!

All the best, Emese
Owner's Response: Thank you Emese for my first great review of the 2009 season. I am so happy that you enjoyed yourselves and that your holiday was fulfilled. It really is a place to be enjoyed. Every year I try to upgrade what I can but still like to hold on to the simplicity that is so Greece and the charm that is so Corfu. Villa Stephanie and Villa Nola both have their separate charm and the garden is becoming a real place to relax and enjoy the evenings with the BBQ's. It is so rewarding to hear that you enjoy your holiday with us and you are very welcome again next year. Repeat visitors ofcourse enjoy a discount if they book early!
Please note: This year just a few weeks ago they blocked some of the satellite channels that we had enjoyed for free for so many years, although I do not believe TV should be too much part of a holiday I must apologise to some guests that expected a fuller range of programmes. There are still however some English channels with movies, sports and childrens programmes. I will be buying a Nova satellite for next year which has to be paid for every month.

Villa Stephanie June 2011

Review Submitted: June 20, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
Peaceful & quiet, yet only 5-10 mins walk from beaches, shops, tavernas. Spacious, well-equipped & scrupulously clean. Jane made booking very easy & answered questions with amazing speed. Paleokastritsa is often described as 'unspoilt' yet it seems entirely a tourist resort with no sign of any original/authentic Greek town life. However, it is a low rise resort with friendly people, good facilities, wonderful beaches & stunning scenery.

A few things I wish I'd known before I booked. First, Villa Stephanie isn't a conventional 2-bedroomed villa, it's actually 2 studio apartments connected by a door. Each apartment has a double/twin bed in a large room with kitchenette in 1 corner & en suite bathroom. This means that if you want to use both beds, at least 1 person/couple will be sleeping with a fridge which goes on & off all night (& if you need to use both fridges, as we did, there is no escape!).

Also, the path to Villa Nola goes right past Stephanie's terrace & Nola's barbecue is next to Stephanie's kitchen window. If your neighbours are barbecuing, you will hear everything they say & smell everything they cook unless you keep the windows closed. The wi-fi is based at Nola & we found it a bit intermittent at Stephanie, although not disastrously so.

These are not criticisms, just statements of fact to help people make more informed bookings. If I had known these things before we came, I would have chosen Nola. Then we would have had much more privacy, and could also have used the beautiful terrace - there is a separate stairway up from Stephanie, but it's not clear whether Stephanie's residents are allowed to use the terrace.

We followed others' advice & ate at Smurf's (perfectly decent, although you seem to pay a bit extra for the beach view) & Nereid (terrific food & better prices than Smurf's). We hired a boat for the day, which was wonderful, although I think we were overcharged about 10 euros for the petrol so beware. We also went up Mount Pantokrator, highly recommended if you have a car, 360° views over Corfu and Albania.

Overall we had a pleasant holiday & particularly appreciated Yvonne who could not have been more helpful. The shady terrace is a delightful place to sit, surrounded by flowers & with the occasional visit from a spectacular Balkan Green lizard or a tom cat hoping for a snack. Corfu is a beautiful island & well worth a visit, & we would recommend Paleokastritsa & these properties for a good beach holiday.

Owner's Response: I am so glad despite a few reservations that you enjoyed your stay with us. It is true that there is no living room as such in Stephanie but there is plenty of space and tables and chairs to sit and eat and enjoy outside. It is described as such, but this will be changing next year as I will be making one of the rooms a living / dining room and the other as a bedroom and rent only to singles, couples and families with one child. The location is lovely and very peaceful; and enjoyed to the full by many of my guests. The villas are well cared for and in excellent condition and very much loved and it shows. The new platform adds another dimension to the property and the views are amazing.

CORFIOT PARADISE

Review Submitted: June 16, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
This was a lovely, clean and comfortable property and just as described. The surrounding garden was full of flowers and birds and a real nature-lover's paradise. It was in a quiet location but less than 250 yards from a small supermarket and 3 tavernas, the best of which was the Belvedere, with lovely Aristotle! The details sent to me prior to the holiday were comprehensive and very helpful. Yvonne, who manages both properties, was very friendly and helpful and a mine of useful information about the area and Corfu in general. There are several beaches quite close to the property, all clean and lapped by the beautiful blue sea. The boat trip round the bays and caves is definitely worthwhile. The walk up to the Monastery is really worthwhile - go early and avoid the crowds and, if you have one, DON'T take your car. The area might prove a problem for people with walking difficulties as there are a lot of hills and steps. We hope to go back next year (please, Jane) and I should have no hesitation in recommending the property to my friends (as long as they don't want it when I do!). Corfu is at its best in early June - still green and lots of flowers and less crowded. All in all, a super holiday!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much Eryl. So happy you enjoyed yourselves and felt that the information, accommodation and Yvonne and Jimmy care lived up to your expectations. We love to hear from our guests and love to read your useful and complimentary comments. Yes, if you go to the monastery you can park at the bottom by the beach in the car-park or if it is not so busy then go up to the monastery car-park but early evening is probably best after 6pm or 7pm...for the sunset or you can walk the whole way from the villa (maybe 30mins 0 but the monastery is at the top of a hill!. You are both most welcome again next year and will have priority with your booking:-)

Clean and welcoming - a tribute

Review Submitted: June 11, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
Just a quick note to say how much Barbara and I enjoyed our stay in Villa Stephanie. It was very clean and welcoming - a tribute, I'm sure, to Yvonne and Artemis. The surrounding grounds were in full bloom and fragrance and we were able to relax in the warmth and tranquility. The view from the new terrace aboive Villa Nola was amazing and once the occupants of Villa Nola had left (we hardly knew they were there) we used the terrace at every opportunity. We were blessed with wonderful weather and spent very little time in the Villa, which we found very comfortable and well-equipped. Yvonne was a mine of useful information (in addition to the excellent notes in the booklet).

We managed to walk (on our second day!) up the old donkey trail to Lakones - not a walk for the unfit and faint-hearted. For two old(-ish) ladies, I think we did very well, but it might be worth mentioning in any future notes about the property that the path is rather difficult and not suitable for elderly or infirm people. Also, the property would be rather unsuitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

We loved the Villa and thought Paleocastritsa was a fantastic place. We have been to several places, both on the Greek mainland and islands but we both agreed that Paleo was by far the best. We hope to return next year and will certainly be in touch.

Great place, great location and great apartment!

Review Submitted: May 27, 2011 Date of Stay: May 2011
Our stay was in Villa Stephanie and it was just as described on the listing particulars. The villa is well maintained and was comfortable, with high ceilings which helped keep it cool to sleep well each night. It is set in a lovely garden, which was in full bloom at the time of our visit in May. The views from the sun terrace (which I think was for Villa Nola's guests) is absolutely stunning - it takes in a wide panorama of the bays, the cliffs and the marina, with a foreground of lots of cypress, lemon and olive trees.

The villa is set within a 5-minute walk of the closest beach (by the Delphini taverna) and a 10-minute walk of both the marina and the two main beaches. There is also an idyllic cliffside monestary seperating the two main beaches. The beaches are a mixture of sand and pebbles, but the sea is crystal clear (think Caribbean clear!).

We hired a 30hp motor boat for an entire day from the marina for €60 plus fuel, came to about €80 for the whole day. This allowed us to see the coastline and get a beach to ourselves for the afternoon.

We'd also recommend a walk up the mountain (or big hill, depending on your outlook!) to Lakones - 40-50 mins, but would suggest sturdier footwear than flip-flops (doh!). Bella Vista serves good, reasonably priced food and has a great view down into Paleokastritsa and beyond.

The tavernas are all fairly similar down by the beaches (lunch with a drink came to about €20). For evening meals, we'd recommend Horizon (just in front of the hotel) for ease - came to about €30, but Nereids was by far the best restaurant for us in Paleo - it's about a 15-minute walk from the villa (on the main road leading back out of Paleo, just under Tango bar, which is also great). The traditional Greek dishes, setting and service were superb - the bill came to €45 (2 courses and 2 drinks each, 10% tip and inc a complimentry flamming-ouzo!).

Paleo is a great location with plenty to do for a week or so. We felt that had we stayed any longer, we would've needed a hire car to have seen different places and view a bit more of the Corfu.

In summary, Villa Stephanie is an ideal place to stay to see Paleo and Lakones, and WHEN we return, we would not consider booking anywhere but Villa Stephanie or Villa Nola.

Thanks to Yvonne, Jimmy and Artemis for keeping the villa spotless. A big thank you also to Jane and Malcolm for the great welcome and for the complimentary drinks on arrival.
