Villa Tukad is a beautiful home. The photos do not do the place justice and besides, so much of what is great about the villa is not what you see but what you hear, smell and feel on your skin. Every morning we’d get up and leave the air-conditioned bedroom, stepping through warm, humid air and into the living room where the tall glass doors were wide open and you could hear the sounds of the beautiful garden, feel the breeze on your skin and smell Komang’s pancakes cooking. We loved it.
The property is clean and well-maintained by the army of wonderful staff. I cannot put too much emphasis on how great they are. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is done with a smile. Desak's dinners were the highlight of the day - her Mie Goreng is simply to die for. Every morning, we got up to Koman's delicious pancakes, toast with the creamiest butter I have ever tasted, tea, fruit platters and Jungle Juice - some seriously good orange juice. We didn't see Kiki very much, but that was our fault for sleeping in every day! Nevertheless, she gave us ideas for what to do, called our takeaway orders in for us on Desak's nights off and sorted out a surprise birthday cake for my fiancée. There are a few guys around the villa too: Pak Novi, Ketut and another chap whose name escapes me. All are very friendly, but very discreet in carrying out their duties, often accompanied by Dinah the dog, with her poor half-tail, who was always around for whatever attention you could spare! We would recommend Budi, the quiet, polite driver, for all your trips in his air-conditioned people carrier. Finally, Paul, the owner, is excellent to deal with: he answered all our questions in detail and was always pleasant to talk to.
Truthfully, we didn't get out and see Bali that much because we concentrated on relaxing – not too difficult in Villa Tukad! Our days were mostly spent sleeping late, reading and playing cards by the pool, then watching movies in the attic room after it got dark at around 6:30pm.
I would recommend this property to anyone wanting a great chill out holiday. Easily within an hour’s drive of Semiyak and Kuta and just over an hour to Ubud, it’s near enough to the main tourist spots for you to get your fill but far enough away from the hustle and bustle for you to really unwind. We definitely recommend the massages on the veranda - a reasonable $13 for an hour's massage!
Learn "terima kasih", the Indonesian phrase for "thank you" because you will need it!
