Your traditional thatched cottage is part of a development of ten self catering thatched cottages nestled snugly into the Donegal rock scape, commanding panoramic views of sea, mountain and off-shore islands. This year turn the clock back. Discover the magic of sleeping under a real thatch roof. Waken to the warbling of the lark. Taste the salt spray on the sea breeze. Listen for the roar of the Atlantic breakers. Forget about the outside world as you gather with your loved ones around a blazing turf fire. Walk our winding roads. Marvel at God's wonderful creation. Pick a bunch of wild flowers and present them to a loved one. Go for a 'hole in one' at the stunning 6th hole on our local golf links. Try out the excellent fishing. Enjoy the 'craic' in Leo's Tavern and savour the music of your ancestors. Take a trip to Tory Island, the last outpost of Gaelic civilisation. Return home refreshed in mind, soul and body. Spacious accommodation for up to 7 persons. We regret, no pets.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in County Donegal, Ireland

Golf: Cruit Island golf links is located on Cruit Island just down the road from the cottage. Although it is only a nine-hole course it has got many rave reviews in golfing magazines and is widely regarded as one of the very finest 9-hole courses in Ireland. Indeed the different tee-boxes on the back nine make it a virtual 18-hole course. The sea, mountain and off-shore island views from almost every tee and green are truly spectactular. It is almost impossible to come off this course feeling less than fully refreshed. The par 3 sixth hole is a real gem. Depending on wind conditions you could find yourself taking anything from a driver to a nine iron for your approach shot. If you under club you are into the sea ! If you over club you are into the sea !! Green fees are very reasonable and visitors to our cottage are offered a 20% discount.

Fishing: Your cottage offers an excellent base for either the fishing enthusiast or indeed anyone who just wants to try his hand at catching a few mackerel from the flat ledge just behind cottage no. 5. Within walking distance of the cottage you can bottom fish off the rocks for specimen wrasse, spin for mackerel and pollock or beach cast for flounder, dab and dogfish. A purpose built sea angling boat operates out of Burtonport, just five miles away, while the game angler has access to 130 small lakes of the Rosses Fishery.........all within a few miles radius of the local town of Dungloe.

Walking: Above all Cruit Island is a walkers paradise. We will give you details of seven wonderful walks, each one starting at your own cottage and returning right back to your cottage. The rockscape, the hidden sandy coves, the winding side roads will all fill your senses and thoroughly refresh you. Very often you will be the only person within sight. Listen for the cuckoo or the warbling notes of the lark and keep a lookout for the rare and protected chough.

Other Activities: Bird watching, rock climbing.

Beautiful place to get away from it all!

Review Submitted: October 5, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
In September 2009 I booked three cottages for a group of 14 people, including myself. The road to the cottages is a one way road, very scenic and beautiful. I would recommend arriving before dark to navigate this little road.
The cottages are simple, clean and tastefully furnished. Any small details that needed to be attended to were attended to promptly by the owners to my satisfaction.
The cottages are remote and in one of the most beautiful locations I have ever visited and I have traveled alot. The beaches are numerous and we basically had them to ourselves. The sunsets were spectacular, out over the sea.
The location affords peace and quiet. We all experienced a definite feeling of being very far away from the outside world and all its cares. I would strongly recommend a stay here if you are looking for somewhere to truly 'get away'.
The owners offer old time Irish hospitality, from the heart, something I hope never dies in my native country!!!

Most beautiful place on Earth!

I've been to these thatched cottages many times and can't recommend them highly enough. Cruit Island is absolutely stunning, and the cottages couldn't be better located- perched on a height overlooking the pounding Atlantic and a perfect sandy beach, its a true retreat from the world. The cliff walks around the island are wonderful, and on the beaches you can collect all kinds of shellfish and wild samphire. Sometimes I go there to have a really quiet time, but often in the summer the whole family has a ball with all kinds of water activities. There's a perfectly safe sandy beach which is great for swimming etc- we just love it.

Fantastic romantic getaway

Review Submitted: September 1, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Myself and my girlfriend stayed for a long weekend in the beautiful Donegal Thatched Cottages this summer. We stayed in one of the cottages that is set right over the ocean. What a view! Conor was really helpful with his knowledge of the local area and we found the many walks all over Cruit was the highlight of our stay. There are so many all with spectacular sights to see. Paying for the turf was a great idea as we loved sitting round the open turf fire on the rocking chairs, toasting marshmallows and enjoying a glass of wine in the evening. We love golf and managed to play a game at the local golf club. Unfortunately we lost a couple of balls in the water at hole number 6! What a course. We went to a lovely local restaurant called Leo's Tavern (home of Clannad and Enya) and had a lovely bowl of Irish stew. Our stay was really romantic and the charm of the cottages and Cruit Island was exactly what we were looking for. We have booked to go again next year and we can't wait.

Vacation of a lifetime

Mary O Chicago, IL USA
Review Submitted: September 4, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
My sister, brother, sister in law & I went on our once in a lifetime vacation to Ireland. We were incredibly forturnate to find the Donegal Thatched Cottages on Cruit Island. What a fantastic setting! The cottage itself was roomy and had everything we needed. It was decorated very nicely but it felt very homey and comfy.
While we were unable to get a seaview cottage, we could hear the ocean and could see the ocean after walking only a few steps. The views were absolutely breathtaking! Every day the ocean looked different and every day was more wonderful than the previous one.
Because we had never been to Ireland, we didn't realize how far away everything was. We drove to Slingo, Anadare, Glenveagh National Park, Derry, and Giant's Causeway - each of these trips were longer drives than we had anticipated. For this reason, I would suggest that it isn't centrally located for sightseeing. It had great opportunities for hiking, though and it would be a wonderful to get away by yourself. Even though there are 10 cottages in the "complex" I never felt that there were lots of people around.
We went to a nearby pub one evening for dinner and traditional Irish music and had a great time! I must say that the road from the pub to the cottage can be pretty intimidating (narrow & dark!!) - even as the designated (non-drinking) driver!
Conor was a wonderful host and I can certainly recommend the Donegal Thatched Cottages to anyone without reservation!!! We had a wonderful time and I hope I can get back there again!
