Traharta or 'strand' is opposite Horse Island at the entrance to Castletownshend Harbour on the South West coast of Ireland. It is part of an unspoilt coast surrounded by green fields and dairy cattle, making it an ideal place to relax and get away from it all. The environment is one of the cleanest and least spoilt in Europe and is a paradise for photographers and artists, because of the subtly changing lighting and sun filled evenings. The site is only 5 minutes from Sandy Cove, 2 miles from Castletownshend, 3 miles from Toe Head 4 miles from the active historic market town of Skibbereen, 5 miles from the Fastnet Rock and 50 miles from Cork and its International Airport. The location is surrounded by tourist interest including golf and sailing at Baltimore; Sherkin and Cape Clear Islands. On the route to the museum at Mizen Head are Mt Gabriel and Schull. Bantry is within easy reach as is the Bera peninsular, Glengarriff, Garinish Island, Kenmare and the Ring of Kerry.

There are many undisturbed archaeological sites, including ancient copper mines, Stone Tumuli and eg Drombeg stone circle. Bicycles can be rented in Skibbereen, the quiet local roads are ideal for cycling. Boat trips are available for fishing and whalewatching. Good salmon and trout fishing is also available in season. A local kayak school teaches the art of kayaking to all levels. There are diving and sailing schools in Baltimore(10 miles). A ferry runs from Baltimore to Clear Island. Golfers, Skibbereen has an excellent 16 hole course. There are also well know courses at nearby Glengarriff, Dunmore,Clonakilty and the Old Head of Kinsale. Many local gardens are open to visitors and the area is a paradise for photographers and artists because of the clean air and superb light.

Small places can be found for refreshments. eg Unionhall and Glandore are within 30-45 minutes. West the road to Mizen Head takes you through places such as Ballydehob, Schull, Crookhaven and Goleen. This road leads to the site of Marconi`s first radio transmission across the Altantic. There are also a good number of artists and craft workers in the area whose studios can be visited. Details at the Tourist Office in Skibbereen

Guest Comments: One Italian guest who arrived late at night and only saw the view from his bedroom window in the morning, came into breakfast and said 'They said I would be staying in a nice place, but no-one told me it would be paradise!' Many people have arrived in Traharta stressed with pressures of work etc. and found that somehow things get in much better perspective sitting on the front patio.

Other Activities: Observing life in the rock pools, visiting local archeological sites, kayaking, whale watching

an architect designed gem

We stayed in this property for a month and I would return in a heartbeat. The house itself is lovely with a great master bedroom overlooking the water. The design of the house is lateral, so that the main bedroom is way down a long hall from the living area. The property is literally right on the water's edge. You can hear the water lapping as you go to sleep. Or you can sit outside on the very good quality lawn furniture on the deck, or nearby rocks on a small cove, and watch the ocean. The area is filled with great natural beauty - the walking is wonderful, and it is extemely peaceful. The locals are friendly and wave at you as you are walking. Yet, you are just a few miles away from Castletownsend, home to MaryAnne's - one of the best foodie pubs in County Cork. And you are not far from the happening places like Baltimore, Skibbereen, etc. The caretaker is
extremely nice as are the owners. If you want to chill, tour the countryside, or you want to experience some of the area's pub life, this place is terrific

The most beautiful location imaginable

Sailaway Worcester, UK
Review Submitted: November 4, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
We have been visiting this property every year for over 10 years now. We have two boys, now 11 and 13 that have grown up holidaying here. We keep coming back because it is such a special place. The views from the deck are extraordinary and on good days we pass hours in the sun sipping wine and enjoying company of friends. The beach immediately infrontof the house is mostly pebbles with a bit of sand at low tide, ideal for swimming, kayaking, sailing, setting off on fishing trips and exploring rockpools. Just around the headland is a beautiful white sandy beach that rarely has anyone on but us. A little further afield we also enjoy a number of fantastic restaurants with very high quality food.

The house itself is a delight. All three bedrooms open straight onto the deck with bathrooms at the back of the property for each bedroom. The kitchen is small but very well equiped and the main room, with large wood burning stove to keep it warm, is perfect for eating together and chatting in the evening. The house is geared up for active people with wetsuits and kayaks etc. with plenty of space to dry out and store kit.

We always travel with friends who usually stay in the cottage, we love it so much most of our friends have stayed with us at some point.

We could not recommend this place more highly, when there it feels like the best kept secret in Europe.
