Traharta or 'strand' is opposite Horse Island at the entrance to Castletownshend Harbour on the South West coast of Ireland. It is part of an unspoilt coast surrounded by green fields and dairy cattle, making it an ideal place to relax and get away from it all. The environment is one of the cleanest and least spoilt in Europe and is a paradise for photographers and artists, because of the subtly changing lighting and sun filled evenings. The site is only 5 minutes from Sandy Cove, 2 miles from Castletownshend, 3 miles from Toe Head 4 miles from the active historic market town of Skibbereen, 5 miles from the Fastnet Rock and 50 miles from Cork and its International Airport. The location is surrounded by tourist interest including golf and sailing at Baltimore; Sherkin and Cape Clear Islands. On the route to the museum at Mizen Head are Mt Gabriel and Schull. Bantry is within easy reach as is the Bera peninsular, Glengarriff, Garinish Island, Kenmare and the Ring of Kerry.

Guest Comments: One Italian guest who arrived late at night and only saw the view from his bedroom window in the morning, came into breakfast and said 'They said I would be staying in a nice place, but no-one told me it would be paradise!' Many people have arrived in Traharta stressed with pressures of work etc. and found that somehow things get in much better perspective sitting on the front patio.

Other Activities: Observing life in the rock pools, visiting local archeological sites, kayaking, whale watching

have just returned from the most wonderful holiday. We had gone with the intention of exploring the area but found that we couldn't pull ourselves away from the cottage and the little beach at Traharta, it was so perfect. With its beautiful views over the beach, the sea and the islands beyond it really is the most idyllic retreat. having breakfast with the door open onto the sea, swimming in the bay, discovering the deserted sandy beach around the headland will all be memories we will treasure. Definitely somewhere to go back to.

Review Submitted: September 27, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
We had an absolutely fabulous time in this idyllic cottage. The kids could run about freely and we practically had the pebble beach all to ourselves. We went on lots of walks, the boys had a go at go-karting, and we went across to flee island at low tide. We had a lovely log fire in the evening, the kitchen is well equipped so eating in was easy. I have not seen a view like that, with literally no people houses around for a long time. We would have stayed longer but half term was only a week! We'll be back for sure.
