Fun in Ferrara

My wife and I wanted to stay in Ferrara because, as a retired history teacher, I was aware of the richness of the D'Este court there in the Renaissance and because it was an attractive Italian town of manageable size. We saw the photo of the Ferrara studio apartment in Via Della Volte on the Holiday Rentals website and instantly fell in love with it. We contacted the owner's representative, Paolo, and were really helped by his friendly advice and support. We also met the owner when we arrived and she was also helpful and welcoming.
We were not disappointed by the apartment or the town. The apartment had real character and was superbly placed on the station side of the historical centre. A short taxi ride will deliver you and your luggage.
The apartment itself is very compact but was perfectly adequate for two people and quite comfortable. It was fun to look out from the window and be looking down the street, where quite often guided parties of tourists would be looking at your place as a piece of history, almost frozen in time.
The town of Ferrara had a real ambiance and we saw it as delightful find, free from the crowds of tourists you will find in Florence and Venice. Just around the corner in one direction was a small but adequate supermarket; just around the corner in another direction was an excellent bread shop where, amongst other delicacies, you could buy the famous Ferrara bread which, because of its shape, we called Crab Bread. One delight was to walk in that street on the Saturday evening after we had arrived and find what seemed like the whole town out for a stroll, a traditional Saturday evening activity.
Ferrara is a friendly town with many interesting sights: the castle, various D'Este palaces and good museums; enough to last the week we were there. Being on flat land, the town is a cyclists' paradise but is also entirely accessible by foot. Ferrara is also well placed for excursions to other places and one day we took the train for a day trip to Bologna.
The accommodation in Casa della Volte enhanced our stay in Ferrara, through its location, its fittings and its historical connections. We would therefore recommend it, and Ferrara, for a variety of good reasons.
