Fabulous place

This place is totally perfect (except for the rather loud church bell which at least stops from 10pm until 7.30am.) Close to everything -the lake, the lido, the bakery with totally delicious slabs of every kind of pizza you have never even imagined, the supermarket, the crazy golf, great restaurants. Very light, modern, well furnished, clean, colourful, great sound proofed windows once shut the world outside is silent! Even the church bells! Useful when sleeping off the boozy lunch. Kids loved it (14 and 10).
The best restaurant is pretty much just round the corner down the alley next to the flat, past another pretty good one, turn left and it's tucked behind the iron railings. You can't book, but if you queue you eventually get in. The cheapest way to get the wine is to ask for "uno litro di vino rosso (or blanco)." You probably knew that already. Bottles seemed pricey. No need for a car at all, we took a boat to Villa Balbianello - if you go on thursday and friday they lock the gate so you HAVE to take the expensive boat which I resented somewhat. Villa B worth a visit - reduced rates for NT members hurrah! Lovely restaurants in Varenna too but go for lunch as I think the boats stop in evenings - not sure as there are ferries that go across a lot from Varenna to Menaggio. I find Belaggio too ostentatios and expensive+++.
Lovely walk up behind the main bit of menaggio, got little map from tourst i - we stood on a cobbled steep path and listened as an elderly male voice drifted out of his window, singing a mournful operetta. Bellisimo. I love Menaggio -this isn't my first visit ad I hope not my last. I love the old fashionedness of it, how elderly couples walk sedately along the front dresssed immaculately, coule with babies, lovers, families. No drunken yobbery here!!
