ROME:
There's no escaping it: Rome means history. There's layers of the stuff - Etruscan tombs, Republican meeting rooms, Imperial temples, early Christian churches, medieval bell towers, Renaissance palaces and baroque basilicas. In this city a phenomenal concentration of history, legend and monuments co-exists with an equally phenomenal concentration of people busily going about their everyday life. It's hard to say what you'll find most breathtaking about the eternal city - the arrogant opulence of the Vatican, the timelessness of the Forum, the top speed of a Fiat, a Ferrari or the bill for your cappuccino.
ROMAN COUNTRYSIDE:
The lovely 'Castelli Romani' are ancient fortified hamlets built by the aristocratic families of the Lazio region during the Medieval age, on volcanic hills the 'Colli Albani' and dotted with sumtuous 16th century villas that were ordered to be built by Popes and Roman princes. There are towns such as Ariccia, Velletri, Frascati and Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of the Pope, which have kept their festive fascination for trips to the country and visitors are rewarded by the sweet smelling bouquets of the dry white wines which are produced here.
