Photos and Description of this Soriano nel Cimino holiday villa
5 bedrooms, sleeps 10/11

The house is situated on the slopes of the Cimini mountains, with truly breathtaking views in all directions of rolling countryside and then mountains, 5 minutes from the beautiful medieval town of Soriano. It sits surrounded by it's own vineyard, olive groves, and nut orchard in a quiet rural location, with masses of space for kids to roam safely to their hearts content. It is 20 mins from the papal city of Viterbo, 30 mins from scenic Orvieto, 1 hour from the Tuscan seaside and an hour north of Rome. It is situated in beautiful countryside, very similar to neighbouring Umbria and Tuscany but far less touristy. Soriano itself is a very friendly local market town with all the necessary amenities and some excellent and reasonably priced restaurants. Lots of good eating in surrounding towns. Rome is easily accessible by car or train (35mins from Orte). The area is known for its many thermal springs. Nearby are the Lakes di Vico and Bolsena, and chestnut forests on the Monte Cimini.

We are situated on the border between Lazio and Umbria near the historic papal city of Viterbo and within easy reach of Rome (one hour's drive away). Orvieto, Todi and the Tuscany coast beaches are all short drives away. Soriano is the nearest town. It is an extremely pretty medieval walled town, with castle and amazing panoramic views of the Tiber valley and Appenine mountains beyond. Viterbo has great shopping as of course does Rome. It is also a wonderful walled Medieval (and rather undiscovered) city, with papal palace and many places of historic interest. It also sports famous volcanic springs and spas. The Cimini mountains and beautiful Lago di Vico are close by as are Monefiascone and the Lago di Bolsena. Golf at the world renowned course of Le Querce at Sutri is a 20 minute drive away. It is an ideal location for discovering Rome and then spending time relaxing around the pool, walking in the mountains, and soaking up life in a typical friendly unspoilt but beautiful area.

We have a full sized ping-pong table, and a table football table in a large games room upstairs - so plenty to do for kids if it rains (not often in spring and summer!). There is lots of land for the kids (and adults) to explore. Giovanni who looks after the estate, has a large kitchen garden, and will often let you pik your own fresh vegetables when they come ready! Floriana who will welcome you to the house,is a local tour guide and will tell you all about the many wonderful things to do locally and in Rome. As the house is set in the countryside a car is a necessity.

Local agent Floriana speaks fluent English. She is a local tour guide and can arrange tours for our guests around the medieval heart of Soriano and many other local sites. Her mother provides exellent traditional pasta making lessons - great fun for adults and children alike. She is a mine of information for local travel and activities/sites to visit.

Soriano-Chestnut Festival(Sagra di Castagne): This takes place in the first two weeks of October, which often sport excellent weather. There are medieval pageants and contests between the quartiere/rione of the town most nights in the main square in Soriano (See photo). The whole community get together to perform, provide typical local food (eaten together in great cellars and halls), joust, and run Soriano's own palio (horse race). This is the best time to get a real feel for the local life and community - a really heartwarming experience - and free chestnuts! This period tends to get booked early.

August 2010

Review Submitted: September 12, 2010 Date of Stay: August 2010
We spent a lovely two weeks in this beautiful house in August 2010. It was a great holiday. The pool was lovely, the house roomy, well-equiped and comfortable. Despite being the middle of August it was always pleasantly cool at night so no difficulty sleeping. Flori who looks after the house locally was extremely helpful and suggested local excursions. Despite not being on the main tourist map there is a lot to do and see in the area. A car is an absolute necessity as even the local shop is a few miles away. All the nearby restaurants proved excellent and are good value compared to elsewhere in Europe.

A Summer to Remember

Review Submitted: August 26, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
My very large family of 7 plus my mother stayed very comfortably at Casa Glenister. That 1 week provided us with memories that will last a lifetime! We ventured to Rome on some days and others lounged by the pool. Soriano gave us a glimpse of an unspoiled rural Italian town. Flori is the best! She provided us with all kinds of tips and information. The pasta and cooking class that she and her mother put on was absolutely wonderful! You will need a car as the train station is about 15-20 min, but a trip to the local market in Sant Eutuzio is only 1km away, a quick little walk. The panoramic views are breathtaking and the kids loved playing in the pool. This is the very definition of a classic country italian villa and will provide any group with great vacation. My kids are already looking forward to our next visit. The owners are great people, quick to respond to emails and very accommodating to our needs. A week is definetly not enough to see everything. The pictures are accurate, but it looks even better in person, everything was clean and well maintained. We would highly recommend this property to anyone!

Cosy family villa in a lovely location

Review Submitted: August 19, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2009
Two families (8 in total) spent 1 week in this cosy family home. Lots of space, inside and outside. Rural, reasonably quiet, sunny location with panoramic views of orchards and hills on the horizon. Pool is just fine. Several places to sit or lounge outside. A week is not enough to see all the interesting places in the area, especially when one also wants to enjoy the pool! Train station to Roma (Termini station, 45 min.) at Orte Scalo (20 min. by car). The region is still unspoiled, low prices and good food, only few tourists around. Polish up your Italian... the locals hardly speak English. The caretaker is a real gem, speaks good English and has lots of tips. We enjoyed a pasta & pizza making class at her place, a perfect evening. Soriano is a nice little town. Supermarket in Sant' Eutizio is a few km's by car (all 3 bicycles had flat tyres).
Kitchen is well equiped. Table tennis & baby foot, a few DVD's for when the weather is not so nice. We would suggest a new coating to the paint work and a little maintenance here & there (shutters are a bit jammed, knives are blunt, ..). The 4 cats are extremely well behaved and the children loved feeding them. Watering all the flower pots felt like home. Owners gave quick and friendly e-mail response. Casa Glenister is a comfortable, clean and welcoming house.

Excellent Family Villa

Review Submitted: August 11, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
A fantastic villa that exceeded our expectations, the pictures do not do it justice. There is plently of room in the Villa (there was 9 of us) and the swimming pool is a real bonus. It is easy to get to Rome from here. The station is only 15 minutes away by car, which you do need. The local town of Soriano is exactly how you imagine rural Italy is. The owners are very helpful and always replied to our emails. The lady who maintains the property, speaks perfect English and is extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this villa.

Peaceful Villa

Review Submitted: January 26, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2008
Me, my husband, two children (13,15) and my mum spent ten days at the villa in May 2007 and also May 2008. The property description is accurate and the owners seam very friendly and accommodating.

The property is large with everything you would need. The pool is fantastic (we spent a lot of time by the pool) and the setting is wonderful. The local village is very close with shops (highly recommend the cake shop in the village square) and a few restaurants, plus there is a supermarket down the road. Floriana the local tour guide is very friendly and helpful. She has a wealth of knowledge about the area.

The downsides are that the bathrooms could do with being updated, the furniture is a little basic and the three cats can be a problem if you are not used to cats. However the villa was very clean and tidy.

A car is essential as the local village would be a long walk with no pavements.

We drove to the local train station for a trip into Rome which we all enjoyed. We also saw a local festival in Soriano which was great and we drove to Viterbo which was worth the drive.

Overall I would highly recommend the villa and Soriano.
