More about Sardinia
Make a holiday rental home or villa in Sardinia your home away from home
Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, and provides a great selection of resorts and villas for the Sardinian holidaymaker. It is situated between Italy, Spain and Tunisia, with a spectacular coastline, and shores filled with fish and shellfish. Inland, Sardinia is a mountainous island, and although the inland areas are far less known to tourists, there are some treasures to be found. Self catering holidays to Sardinia are what you make of them, and taking a holiday villa in Sardinia is the perfect way to ensure the balance of beach and culture you desire.
Things to do in Sardinia
The beaches in Sardinia are wide and sandy. The Emerald coast has become a millionaires favourite, and the luxury villas in Sardinia and exclusive yachts in the marinas are testament to this. The sea is clear, and temperatures encourage swimming from early May until November. There are facilities for sailing and deep sea fishing, as well as scuba diving and windsurfing, accessible from all Sardinia villas.
Inland, there are numerous caves to be explored in the mountains, including the huge area of ancient artificial caves at Anghelu Ruju, and the remains of Le Nuraghe are a UNESCO world heritage site. There are numerous archaeological remains hidden in olive groves around the island, dating back to as far as 1700BC, which are a ‘must see’ attraction on a Sardinia holiday.
Festivals are very important in Sardinia, and there is a festival during every month of the year, with folk dancing, singing and free food.
Places to holiday in Sardinia
Cagliari villas and resorts are a favourite holiday destination with many people. It is most known for its beaches, which stretch into the horizon, but also offers the protected national park of Parco dei sette Fradelli, with miles of hikes through unspoilt and dramatic landscapes.
The best beaches on the island are arguably those at Costa Smeralda on the northeast coast, and the crystal clear waters and archipelago of Della Meddalena provide perfect conditions for snorkelling. This is why Costa Smeralda has become the main tourist focus of the island.
Alghero is a charming town set just inland from the coast. It is an old fortress town which has lost little of its ancient feel, and some of the ancient defences remain, including the main gates of Porta Terra. Further inland, Nuoro is the centre for the traditional Sardinian way of life. Here, they still speak the native language of Sardo, and local crafts and culinary treats are still made using traditional methods. A holiday rental in Nuoro also acts as a base for those wanting to climb Mount Ortobene.
Weather in Sardinia
Being a Mediterranean Island, Sardinia benefits from a warm dry climate, with average temperatures in July and August of 31?C, and remarkably mild winters, with little rain and average temperatures in January of 14?C.
Flights to Sardinia
Sardinia has four main passenger airports, Caliari, Olbia (OLB), Alghero (AHO) and Tortoli (TTB). Cheap flights to Sardinia are available on many airlines from London Gatwick (LGW), Heathrow (LHR) and Manchester (MAN).
