Our family has holidayed in La Stufa no less than three years in succession, and each time has been a joy. The two-storey apartment is part of a beautifully restored 18th century farmhouse, set among delightful gardens and with a good size pool which has a stunning view of the surrounding hills. It is very comfortably furnished in typical local style and the separate kitchen has all mod-cons, making cooking a pleasure, especially with the abundant local ingredients. The lounge area has ample seating and plenty of floor space to accommodate kids and their inevitable toys and detritus, and this in turn leads onto a private patio area where you can eat outside in pleasant surroundings. If you are unlucky enough to encounter inclement weather, however, the kitchen table seats four comfortably.
The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens, with ample space for kids to run around in as well as pretty seating areas – there's even a vineyard, lovingly tended to by Peter , one of the owners. Location-wise, Cortona – a gorgeous Etruscan town perched improbably at the top of a steep Tuscan hill – is only 15 minutes away, and has many places of historical significance, including an abundance of Etruscan tombs. Perhaps even nicer are its ubiquitous bars and restaurants, presided over by friendly locals, and the laid-back 'arty' vibe that prevails, with little galleries and artists' studios round every corner. And if you wish to travel further afield, the autostrada is conveniently located, making it easy to visit many Tuscan and Umbrian towns and cities, for example, Florence, Siena, Perugia and Orvieto.
Perhaps the most significant element of holidaying at la Lombarda, however, is the friendliness and helpfulness of its owners Peter and Nina. They are endlessly generous and welcoming hosts, and particularly kind and indulgent to children ( our two particularly enjoy trotting round after Peter in the garden and regaling him with questions about the plants!) Their willingness to help make their guests' stay as pleasant as possible is incredible and really adds to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the property.
So would we go again? Emphatically yes! La Stufa at la Lombarda offers all the elements you need for a relaxing holiday in a gorgeous location at great value for money.'Nuff said!
