Romantic Tower With Fantastic Views And Stunning Pool on Tuscany Umbria borders
La Torre della Palazzina is a beautiful centuries old circular watchtower. Set in the hills of south-eastern Tuscany in its own two acres of land with a stunning swimming pool, it has really spectacular views over towering majestic cypress trees to the Umbrian hills on the other side of the Niccone valley. The restoration of the Tower has hardly altered the original 15th century outside appearance at all. The three interior floors, which still retain their ancient wooden beams and terracotta tiles, have been ingeniously altered to provide modern and comfortable self catering accommodation for four people A wood burning stove and central heating makes this unique property a special and romantic place for summer and winter rentals. Ideally located to the cultural gems of both Tuscany & Umbria with Firenze, Siena and Roma easily accessible. Lago Trasimeno, which is a short drive away, offers a mass of things to do and see. There are lots of great restaurants nearby.

La Palazzina is located in the Niccone valley, one of the loveliest and most sought after parts of this region. The valley forms the border between Umbria and Tuscany which means that it is right in the heart of cultural Italy. You are spoilt with choice of places to visit ~ Cortona, Perugia, Assisi, Gubbio, Lago Trasimeno, Montepulciano are close by and Siena, Florence and Rome are also within easy reach by car or train. There is a short tree lined privately owned gravel driveway that leads up from the tarmac road, so it is quiet and tranquil here and yet close enough to the local villages of Lisciano Niccone and Mercatale di Cortona of the Niccone valley with their shops and restaurants. The setting of La Torre della Palazzina, nestling under the battlements of an ancient castle, is the very stuff of dreams. Above all else life meanders at a gentle and leisurely pace here and it really is a special place to stay at any time of the year.

| Notes: | Additional photos and further notes about the accommodation will be sent to any enquiry. The owners of La Palazzina are a British couple that live in the neighbouring farmhouse and they will normally be there to welcome all guests on arrival. If required they can provide advice and assistance during your stay, or alternatively they can remain totally unobtrusive and discreet! They do provide a truly comprehensive house book with a mass of information on the local area which many guests have found makes their own guidebooks almost redundant. If requested at the time of booking a meal with wine can be prepared for your first evening. This will be left in the fridge to await your arrival. |
The History of La Torre della Palazzina
The Tower was built in about 1400 as a military watchtower controlling the approaches to Sorbello Castle. During the 1939 - 1945 war it became a focal point for escaping British prisoners of war who gained access to the occupied castle cellars through a tunnel from the Tower and were given food and clothing from the castle owners. This tunnel now contains nothing more romantic than water pipes and of course lots of bats! The modern restoration has not altered the exterior, but the interior was completely changed, so it therefore now has C15 walls with a C20 filling! As you laze on the terraces after a soporific lunch and let your imagination flourish you may even imagine you can hear the muffled tread of ancient soldiers!
The Views
No notes can do justice to the views from La Torre della Palazzina. The prevailing comment from all guests is the truly amazing views that are to die for! Sitting on the large terrace surrounding the Tower you can gaze over the tops of towering ancient cypress trees to the other side of the valley and Umbria. There can be no better place to spend those last, or those first, few hours of a day than here with either a morning cappuccino or an evening sun-downer!
The Pool
The 6 x 12 metre swimming pool with Roman steps pool has to be the ultimate pool with a view! It is located in a dramatic position on a terrace up and behind the Tower. The pool design allows one to laze indolently on the Roman steps or stand on a small ledge all around the pool and gaze at the stupendous views whilst immersed in the warm water!
