La Cerreta is an old farmhouse in the beautiful and unspoilt Garfagnana region of Northern Tuscany. It stands alone and is very private - you can have it all to yourself! Views from the farmhouse over the valley are breathtaking. Take a lazy lunch on the terrace and then freshen up with a dip in the pool. Inside are whitewashed walls, old beams and an open fire. Traditional and simple furnishings add character. Flexible accommodation includes 3 double/twin rooms and sitting room with 2 sofabeds - extra beds for children can be added, so there is the possibility of renting to two small families (friends of course!). Couples too will feel at home here, as the interior is not overwhelming in size. There are 2.5 hectares of land, all yours to explore, with vines. a wood, and lots of sunny spots for picnics. The swimming pool is above ground and so very safe for younger children. A much-loved house for a wonderful holiday for families or couples.

The Garfagnana region of Northern Tuscany chestnut covered hills and the Apuan Alps circling round. The Orecchiela National Park is about 15km away - perfect for walkers and nature lovers. Wonderful hilltop towns including Barga with its own opera and jazz festivals. Florence, Lucca, Viareggio and the fantastic Cinque Terre with its brightly painted houses and sheltered coves, are all perfect for day trips by car or train.

  • There is also an invigorating, hot shower outside which is attached to the deck but I would hesitate to pass it off as a bathroom!

  • Extra beds can be added for children. The newest bedroom has it's own shower room - v nice. This bedroom has a separate entrance and is accessed around the back of the house - useful if you fancy getting away from fellow guests now and again. It is the bedroom pictured and opens straight on to the garden and new deck.

Notes: There are two double rooms, one twin room and a sitting room with a double and a single sofa bed plus extra children's beds wherever required. Normal changeover day is Saturday although we can be flexible on that.

There is a small 6 hole golf course about one kilometre down the road, and this is open to members of the public. Skiing is also close at hand, with Abetone only a three quarters of an hour drive away. The area is renowned for the national parks of the Alpi Apuane and the Orechiella, and in early spring and autumn especially, the huge chestnut forests and meadows of the Corfino are awash with wild flowers. The area is a walker's paradise.

The town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is very close, with some lovely small restaurants and bars. Market day is Thursday, and it seems the whole town turns out for that! Nearby (3km) are Villa Collemandina which has an excellent restaurant, and Castiglione di Garfagnana (6km) which is a very beautiful medieval walled town. Lucca is 45 minutes drive, and here you will find some fantastic shops (very expensive!) and a great afternoon's entertainment hiring bikes and cycling around the ancient walls.

The garden at La Cerreta is large, and has a small wood which children can play in. The pool is a raised one, 8m by 5m (unheated), with a superb view across to the hill top towns across the valley. There is a lovely terrace on which one can wile away the hours with a bottle or two of wine.

We very much enjoyed our stay at La Cerreta - what a fabulous place.
We had excellent weather and enjoyed the house to the full, as well
as seeing a little of the surrounding area (Corfino, Castiglione,
Castelnuovo, Forte dei Marmi..) We both thought the countryside was
fantastic.

All in all, a holiday to remember. Thanks again.

Just a short email to tell you what a lovely time we had at La Cerreta last week. We would have written a note but were scrambling for time on the last day trying to make our early flight from Pisa!
The house was just what we had hoped for, the setting was fantastic and the views especially from the pool were wonderful. We had some good weather too and although it clouded over for the last two days, it didn’t detract from an excellent holiday.
It really was a great break and we’d love to return at some point. Many thanks again.

Great fun in undiscovered northern Tuscany

Real Tuscany and no crowds, either, which was a relief after the cities and tourist-heavy places. We shared this with another family and with a big garden and a fun pool, we didn't feel the need to venture far. There are two terraces with lovely views and eating at home after foodie shopping at the market in Castelnuovo felt as much of a treat as eating out. Did make it to Lucca a couple of times, though, and to a local cheesemaker and climbed up to the top of Barga (mountainous views). Went to Lucca for a family cycle around the city walls, then supper (loved Lucca). A couple of our party went on a big walk in the Garfagnana. I didn't go but wished I had cos they said it was like something out of the Sound of Music, with shepherds' huts and wildflower meadows.

Family holiday at La Cerreta

We have stayed twice at La Cerreta and loved our holiday there each time. Memories consist of long lunches on the terrace overlooking distant villages, walks along the river through the woods, refreshing dips in the pool and waking up to amazing views over the Tuscan countryside... the house itself fitted our family perfectly, was clean and furnished well. There are plenty of good restaurants and days out, our favourite was cycling around Lucca on the city walls.. A great place if you want some peace and quiet, within easy reach of some unspoilt Tuscan Towns. Highly recommended.
