A wonderful week in Tuscany

Having trawled the internet for days trying to find the perfect Tuscan retreat for our stay in October, I finally came across this little gem. Not only did it have 3 separate bedrooms (noone relegated to a sofabed in the lounge), but it was also a bargain ... I was a little worried it was too good to be true!
Any concerns we had were quickly dismissed as we drove up the long access road to the property. The views were as stunning as the pictures suggested, and on entering the property, we were pleased to find it was clean and spacious. Even better, the owners had left a little welcome package of milk and a gorgeous local jam tart.
We stayed in L'Arco, which accommodated 6 adults and a baby very comfortably. The rooms were lovely and airy, although the only downside was that the front door of the appartment opened directly into the twin room. Fortunately, we were able to use the back door most of the time. The kitchen-dining room was really spacious - far bigger than most you find in self-catering accommodation - and as we had a small baby with us, it was lovely to be able to cook up big family meals in the evenings rather than relying on eating out.
We had good weather most of the week, but it did get very cold at night, which gave us the perfect excuse to light the log fire in the lounge. Very cosy indeed!
The end of the week was warm enough for us to brave the unheated swimming pool. The best of us only managed a few lengths before our muscles began to freeze, but it was very refreshing. I imagine it would be perfect in the height of summer. However, we were disappointed that the hydromassage pool was also unheated.
The property is 10 minutes' walk from the little town of Villetta, which includes a lovely pizza restaurant and bar, and two small shops. There is also a big supermarket about 15 minutes' drive away. The restaurant is only open for a couple of hours at lunchtime, and then reopens in the evening. It's worth trying the pizzas which are very tasty and good value.
I really recommend this property for families, couples or groups of friends. It is ideal for those looking for peaceful walks in the countryside as well as those wishing to explore more of Tuscany ... you can easily get a train from Villetta into Lucca if you don't fancy the drive, and it stops at lots of lovely little towns along the way (tickets can be bought from the shop in Villetta).
I will definitely consider going back next year!
