Detached house with private pools in the unspoilt, totally uncommercialised, green & mountainous Garfagnana region of north Tuscany. The views from the house & pool are fantastic, and the grounds, with their own orchards a perfect place to relax. The property is beautifully, newly renovated, with sleeping accommodation/shower-rooms are split over 2 floors - an ideal choice for 2 families. There is a large well equipped farmhouse style kitchen with eating area, living room with open fire and SAT TV. In the basement there is a separate laundry area, and also a further dining room for eating at a cool temperature when it is too hot outside. Outside there are 2 terraces, BBQ private pool and large garden. The area is dominated by the hills and mountains surrounding the valley, and there are hill top villages in abundance awaiting your exploration, as well as the local Natural Parks. This is the 'real' Italy.

This is the 'real' Italy, and due to lack of tourism is very cheap for eating out, and trying local cuisine. Good touring base for visiting Barga (30 min), Lucca (1 hr), Pisa (1hr20min)Florence (less 2hrs) . Real beauty of the area is however the totally unspoilt countryside, the walking and picnicking opportunities and the peacefulness associated with visiting a non touristy area... Pisa aiport is 90 mins; Florence 2 hrs; Genoa 2.5hrs

  • An English speaking local will visit you at the start of your holiday, and will be available throughout for assistance/guidance.
  • Entry days are Saturday to Saturday in high season, with an element of flexibility at other times. Payment will also be taken in sterling via bank transfer to a UK bank.
    Gas; electricity; water etc all included in price, as is first supply of wood for fire. Heating is charged separately.

Location: Property is located circa 1 1/2 hr drive from Pisa, 2 hrs from Genoa, 2 hrs Florence, and 2 1/2 from Bologna. The house is situated at the end of a private (largely unmade) lane, a 2 minute drive from the mountain village of Poggio, which itself is located circa 10/15 minutes from local market town of Castelnuovo - less than 1 hour north of Lucca. The area is ideal for a totally relaxing holiday in the countryside with fantastic views at every turn whatever the time of year. Explore the hundreds of hill-top villages, go walking/horse riding/fishing, or for a bike ride. Relax with a glass of wine and watch locals play Bocce, or spectate at the cheese rolling for which the area is famous! In the autumn join in the local passion of mushroom picking, or feast on chestnuts roasted on your fire! Tourism is yet to hit this area, and this is truly one of those increasingly rare places in Europe where you can experience the real way of life of the locals.

Cuisine: Garfagnanan cuisine is fairly simple, but scrumptious, using local fresh produce to prepare dishes, which since they are prepared in the main for the locals are very cheap! The local wine is good, and also extremely inexpensive. Lunch can easily be eaten (2 courses + cheese/fruit) and wine for circa £5 per head, and even cheaper if you select a 'cold' banquet. Plenty of places to picnic in seclusion, with provisions easily found in local bars/shops as well as the occasional supermarket.

Locals: The locals are very friendly and helpful, although it is rare to find English spoken - take your phrase book!

We spent two weeks in Villa Caprifoglio last autumn. The house was tidy, garden and swimming pool were well kept and the surroundings was peaceful and the view over the valley very beautiful. We were a group of 5 adults and 3 kids and we all had plenty of room in the house.

Very recommended for a family holiday!
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Families with Young Children, Romantic Getaway

Good property for 2 families. Beautiful Garden.

The garden and its views are the real highlight of this property. Loads of space in the garden, panoramic views, a large swimming pool and a nice patio area with BBQ and vine trellis, childrens swings, wildlife, etc. The house is very private too - there are only two neighbouring properties but they're far enough away to be almost out of sight.
We went as 2 couples with kids. This house is really ideal for this set up as both floors have 2 almost identical bedrooms (1 dbl & 1 twin single) and a bathrooms so the house can work as 2 independant living spaces.
You definately need to hire a car as there nothing to visit on foot, but there's lots of interesting little towns to visit and the area is v attractive to explore. It was about 1h 40m drive from pisa airport for us.
Recommended for:  Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children
