the real italy

I guess it alldepends on what you want from a holiday.
In our case, it was a large well equipped villa no more than two days drive from the Channel ports, and close to an airport.
we have got into the habit of renting a large place in the summer for a fortnight and having open house for family and friends; we drive out with all the supplies you want for a fortnight, and others come, by air, for anything from two to ten days.
This substantial, well maintained and well equipped property fitted the bill for our 2007 jaunt.
Pisa airport is only 90 minutes away, by car or rail,it is situate in the middle of a large village, with shops reataurants etc, and it is just less than 2 days drive from the Channel.
the other seriously good advantage from our perspective was it was not in the middle of a tourist area, and the pace, style, and cost of living were all the better for that.
Owned by a local family, who also run a bar and rerstaurant in the village, the welcome could not have been friendlier, and the care shown to us was exemplary without being invasive.
Off the beaten track in the Upper Garfagnana valley, excellent and ridiculously cheap pizzas were reradily available in the local restaurants.
The swimming pool was heated and poolside was well equipped.
Days out to Lucca, and other spots in the Valley could be easily achieved by train- which is reliable and cheap, and the line passes through some spectacular scenery in the valley.
Although we did not go, Florence is easily a day trip by rail or car, as is the coast.
All in all a faultless happpy, and relaxing holiday.
Thoroughly recommended if that is your kind of thing
