Photos and Description of this Barga holiday cottage 2 bedrooms, 2 shower rooms, sleeping 4+2,

A lovingly restored detached stone cottage, with original beamed ceilings and flooring, situated in the hills overlooking the beautiful medieval town of Barga. Just a 10 min. drive or so from town, yet very peacefully situated in circa 6 hectares of private farm land/forest high up in the hills. The views from both the house/extensive patio area & the land are stunning. Eating al fresco is a real treat -the lights of the town provide a romantic backdrop, and due to the altitude it feels possible to touch the stars! Alongside the patio area there is a large original outdoor pizza oven, a chestnut drying house. In the fields above, there is the infinity style swimming pool (5M x10M), Bocce court and table tennis. If you like to cook, then the house is perfect - there is a wood burning 'aga' in the kitchen, a modern oven 'outside' and also the pizza oven & BBQ. The house is furnished in traditional style, is well equipped and lovingly presented. A perfect 'remote, yet central'.

The house and grounds: The house is totally private just 10 mins from the centre of the medieval town of Barga. A great deal of care has been taken to restore the house to its original glory. This choice is absolutely ideal for families, with plenty of room for children to explore the grounds and plans afoot to ensure you need never set foot in the house during the day if you prefer! Just use the outdoor kitchen for your supply of cold drinks and wine, & to prepare those salads hand picked from the grounds... The pool is situated above the house, with stunning views of the countryside... There really is a feeling of pure peace at this house,& it is the perfect place to completely relax, and enjoy the pleasures of the scenery and the quiet! This is an agriturismo and as such bees are kept on site (fresh honey provided) and there are 3 resident cats - not permitted in house. That said, with the house just a 10 min. drive from the beautiful medieval town of Barga,

Barga: Barga is a beautiful medieval hill-top town, situated approximately 45 minutes North of Lucca. The town boasts cobbled hilly streets, fantastic views, an abundance of churches; 3 bridges, and a duomo. There is also a large outdoor community swimming pool surrounded by the Alpuan Alps. Barga is well known in the area for its good restaurants, and also for its open air concerts held overlooking the town. Jazz; opera, and the classics, are performed, quite often free of charge. The town is well located to serve as a base for exploring either by car, or by train, the more well known sites of Lucca(45 mins), Florence (1.5hrs), Siena(2.25 hrs), and the seaside town of Viareggio (1 hr). The famous caves of Grotto di Vento are circa 20 mins away. The completely unspoilt area of Garfagnana, further North is also easy to explore, with its Natural Parks, mountains, hill top villages, and panoramic views at every turn!

Relaxing stay in Barga

J13JHH Bramhall, Cheshire, UK
Review Submitted: August 10, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Highly recommended - accurate description, secluded, authentic, tranquil, clean, great outside area including pool, fabulous views of the surrounding area, unobstrusive and very hospitable owners.

Use of a car essential.

House itself is beautiful - traditional, full of character and well maintained. Kitchen, small hall area and dining/living room downstairs (along with outside kitchen/wc). Up the stairs to a landing area (which can double as an additional bedroom) and 2 other bedrooms along with a bathroom. Outside seating enables al fresco dining with wonderful views.

Small number of (rustic/slightly uneven) steps to reach the pool which has stunning views (for those of reduced mobility or with very young children/babies there is a slight detour up a path available for those not great with steps).

Resident bees kept away from the house and produce a 5-star honey. Part-time resident cats (and handful of sheep which are kept in neighbouring field!) quiet, friendly, fun and very well behaved.

Good restaurants and local shops far enough away to reinforce the complete immersion into secluded country life yet convenient enough when needed.

We tend not to return to holiday destinations but if we ever came back to this region we would happily stay at this property again.

A piece of Tuscan Heaven

anne & ivor Ireland
Review Submitted: August 4, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We stayed at Mengarino, Barga in June 09 and cannot think of a more idyllic place to take a relaxing holiday. The house seems to blend so perfectly with the surroundings and the animals, sound of buzzing bees, friut trees and fragrant flowers truly make this an oasis not to be missed. The house was spotless, well maintained and had everything you could want for very comfortable self-catering. The location & views were amazing, and the range of terraces around the house means that you can follow the sun (or the shade) as the day passes. Marco and Simonetta are incredibly helpful & hospitable and their pizza night is a treat not to be missed.

The pool is a true highlight and no pictures can do justice to the views !

Barga is a great little village just 10 minutes down the road. It has good grocery shops, cafe bars and a few restaurants. We had no reason to go any further!

Overall I cannot overstate how happy we were at this house - I am sure we will return again & again & again....

What a gem!

Pastori Somerset
Review Submitted: May 23, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
We are a couple, who had a fantastic week at Mengarino in early May 2009....nearly had our teenage children visit us but they couldnt make it, they would have loved it.

The cottage has all the facilities you are going to need for your stay with a well eqiuiped kitchen for cooking wonderful Italian produce. The outside kitchen is also very handy and must come into it's own from June to September when al fresco is in full swing. The infinity pool above the cottage is simply stunning with views to keep your mouth ajar during your stay, so is the fantastic vista from the many points in front of the cottage where you can eat or just sit and watch.

The sunset is in the perfect place from the cottage front or the pool...wherever you want to be to have it full in your face until dusk!

The main bedroom has a view from it's window that you will not forget, especially on the mornings when there is mist in the valley below......

The owners, Simonetta and Marco do not live near the cottage but visit regularly, especiallty Marco who tends to the Chestnut trees, bees and lambs who are let out to feed on the grass and wander if the occupants are OK with it.....the lambs wandered into the kitchen the week before we arrived!

They both continue to work hard on some buildings within the property and land when they can ...none of it noticeable during your stay there...unless you dont enjoy watching a beekeeper (Marco) tending to his swarms down on the terraces from time to time! All the bees are harmless by the way.

Marco and Simonetta normally offer a pizza evening with the guests, using the bread oven next to the chestnut drying house to create pizza's like you heve never had before! Plus they are really lovely people and even if you are after just a quiet (no-one near you) stay, make sure you have an evening with them or simply just get to know them while you are there. We had some fantastic honey, local meats and pecorino cheese from them.

We will certainly return to Mengarino and recommend it for all types of holiday as a base for.....sightseeing, walking, just being in the Garfagnana area or just relaxing there on your own or with your family.....great for young families!

Enjoy..........

One of the best

ChrisYork York - UK
Review Submitted: April 17, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2008
We stayed at this lovely getaway two years on the run - and then were contemplating a third year. (Sort of sorry I was talked into trying somewhere different - but we will return!)
It may be a bit quiet - but in the heat of the summer it is absolutely perfect. Yes, some places are a little far away - Lucca, Florence and Sienna all require a long day to visit (tho' Lucca is not actually that bad in terms of time). But we had our happiest family holidays there over two years (2007 and 2008)
Simonetta and Marco are stars and very warm and welcoming - and never seem to tire of putting on their "Pizza Nights". A highlight - and great fun - even if you initially think "Uh oh - I want to be left alone". Do NOT be tempted to miss out! It is brilliant.
Would happily return - but I think you have to enjoy at the peak of the summer. That pool always attracts comment when I have it on my computer screen (still dreaming of holidays there!).
And Barga is lovely.
Maybe meals out are a little tricky to arrange - but the best for us was a barbeque every night, on the patio, watching the sun go down and just relaxing. Perfect spot! Keep it that way! And enjoy.

Cosy cottage in the hills

Dovely London
Review Submitted: June 3, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
We stayed in this property last week and had a great time. The views over the mountains are spectacular and the peace and tranquility are wonderful. The cottage itself is quite small and cosy with 2 bedrooms which was fine for 4 adults. The real benefit of this property is the outside areas though. The terrace is wonderful for outdoor meals, the Chestnut forest is great to scramble around and the fabulous pool area is perfect for soaking up the sun. If you get good weather, the property is amazing. If it's raining, however, there are limitations. It is pretty remote - 15 minutes from Barga and an hour from Lucca. If peace and relaxation are what you're after then don't hesitate to go but if you like a bit more action, you may prefer to be closer to the town. The owners are really lovely and spent an evening baking pizza's for us in the 18th Century pizza oven as well as providing honey, cakes, cheese and local Presecco!
