This newly renovated Tuscan farmhouse sits on a two kilometre drive above the ancient hillside town of Barga. It is secluded yet within easy reach (10 mins) of both Barga and Castlenuovo with their many facilities for eating and entertainment. The villa has three double bedrooms (one en-suite), two further bathrooms, a modern, fully equipped kitchen, living room, terrace and pool area. The large cantina on the ground floor has been converted into a games room offering Ping Pong and Darts. There is a mettato or chestnut store outside & bbq. It is minutes from hill walking, trekking, mountain biking, kayaking & fishing and is just 25 mins from the ancient walled town of Lucca and 1 hour from Pisa International Airport. Florence with all its attractions is 1 hour away. A trip to the beach at Viareggio or Forte dei Marmi is 45 min. Il Castagnello is set in the tranquil and beautiful chestnut forests of the Alpi Apuane. The villa is less than one hour from Pisa International Airport, 30 minutes from the medieval walled city of Lucca and just one hour by train from the culture and architecture of Florence. It is also ideally placed for day trips to the seaside - the Italian Riviera with Viarreggio and Forte dei Marme make a fabulous family day out. Set on a private drive two kilometres from the main road you will enjoy breathtaking views across the valley to the hillside battlements of Barga, your nearest town. During the season Barga enjoys art, opera and jazz festivals. If you want something more energetic than lying by the pool in the sun you can head for the local sports facilities, you can fish in the River Serchio, horse ride in the valley or walk in the beautiful Garfagnana National Park. A trip to the wind caves or a picnic at nearby Lake Ponticose make terrific family days out.

Notes: During 2003/2004 the villa has been renovated to provide fabulous accommodation for either a large family, two families or a group of sharers. It is a stone farmhouse originally home to generations of Tuscan farmers. The original hay loft is now a living room with beautiful views. The construction of the house has taken place over the past years using local artisans and materials to ensure that the house keeps its original character whilst being upgraded to provide beautiful accommodation. There is also a games room in the ground floor cantina. The farmhouse is situated above the village of Campo. It is secluded, lying at the top of the hill up a two kilometre private drive, but is only 10 minutes from the facilities of both Barga and Castlenuovo giving you the best of both worlds. In the evening you can enjoy a drink on the terrace and watch the fireflies dance below whilst during the day ample amounts of both sun and shade bathe the gardens to ensure contentment for all.

The Property: The living accommodation comprises a living room, with an open fireplace, and a terrace where you can sit to admire the views across the Serchio valley. It is well designed for both dining and lounging with stereo, TV, games etc. There is full central heating for winter stays. There is a fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine, stove, etc. and ample supplies of all cutlery and crockery that you will need for your stay, including all table linen, tea towels etc. The kitchen is equipped for both inside and outside dining. The first floor has a double bedroom, with an outside terrace where you can enjoy coffee and peace as you wake. There is also a shower room and toilet, so that you can wash off from the pool without going upstairs! The upper floor has two double bedrooms, one twin room and one room with bunk beds. There are also two shower rooms on the upper floor. Games room with pool table & darts. Outside there is a mettato, the chestnut store, now a pool house.

Booking details: Il Castagnello is available all year round, with full central heating for the winter. Bookings are taken Saturday to Saturday. Your stay includes all services, a weekly change of linen and clean and all pool charges. We have a local agent who is English speaking who will be available if necessary. The pool will be open from May to End of September. Il Castagnello is priced for the whole property, for a maximum of 10 people.

Ski: Skiing is available in the mountains of the Alpi Appenines - for both beginners and those more advanced during the season. The nearest skiing to the house is approximately 45 minutes at Casone. It is approximately one hour from the peaks of Abetone.

The villa was really well equipped and beautifully furnished. A large group of us went and there was plenty of space for all. There are great views from the terraces. The setting is quiet and secluded. The property was very clean and was clearly well maintained. The English owner gave excellent customer service and was very prompt and helpful. The nearby town of Barga has some lovely restaurants and the area as a whole has some great places to visit. I will definitely be going again!

What a fabulous home - it really didn't feel like a holiday rental property so wonderfully fitted out - stunning views - beautiful pool - perfect for v large family or couple of smaller families - loads of space for everyone and Barga and the surrounding area has so much to offer.
