A truly different holiday for nature lovers, walkers and above all those who love horse riding! Fornace offers a rustic holiday in the depths of the N Tuscany countryside, close to many nature trails. There is one 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom stone cottage, with the option to hire the converted 'chestnut house' of 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, (which is not hired separately) for a larger party. The property is set in extensive grounds which boast a large private swimming pool 15Mx9M with graduating depth, & paddling pool 2.5m diameter, depth 0.5M. The property also has its own stables (set far enough into the grounds not to bother those not interested in horses!). The property is fully equipped for a self catering holiday, but meals will be provided if required, either regularly or just on the odd occasion...Horse riding is available literally a stone's throw away, either by the hour, the day or why not hire a horse for the duration of your holiday? Or just relax and picnic in the grounds.

Fornace is set in the heart of the countryside, in extensive grounds and totally off the beaten track approx 2kms from the ancient village of Fabbriche di Vallico, and is approached down a dirt track road' The site is surrounded by chestnut woods (perfect for mushroom picking!), and the apuane mountain range, and is totally isolated. It is set on the edge of the The National Park - Parco Naturale, Alpi Apuane - perfect for walking, trekking, riding and just picnicking! There are also very good opportunities for fishing. Despite the isolated location there are 3 or 4 good restaurants within a 5/10 minute drive, and a many others further out. Lucca is less than an hour away; Barga 30 mins; Pisa 75 mins; Florence 1 hr 45 mins; Siena 2 hrs 30 mins.

Additional information about rental rates

  • Payment will also be taken in sterling via bank transfer to a uk bank.
    We can be flexible and provide additional beds as required - please ask. The cost for each bed over and above those sleeping 10, is €45 per person per week - to cover costs of bringing in beds, linen, and extra utility usage.
    Easter and Christmas prices are same as May prices.
    Bedding and towels are included.
  • Horse riding is E15 per hour or you can hire a horse for E50 per day. Longer excursions are negotiated separately.
    Breakfast, lunches and dinners can be provided - please ask for cost.
    For the 'private chef' option - i.e. Daniela cooking dinner as and when required, the cost is between E12 and E20 per person including wine depending on the menu.
  • English speaking Owners representative available at all times if required.
    Cot and highchair available on request.
    There is also opportunity to try archery on site, and Fishing weekends, endurance horse riding, blacksmithing and hunting weekends can be arranged.

  • There are four double rooms and one twin with further bed. Please note however we can add other beds where required to provide flexibility in sleeping accommodation. There is a cost of £30 per person per week for use of extra beds.

Notes: The main house consists of a downstairs 'hall' area with wood burning oven leading to a character kitchen with hob, fridge freezer , microwave & open fire. Also on the ground floor is a double bedroom with en suite shower room (with curtain a opposed to cubicle). On the first floor is a further double bedroom, a children's twin room and a further shower room. Immediately outside the house is a covered eating area, which joins the main house to the chestnut house. On the ground floor of the chestnut house is a further larger living/kitchen/dining area, with TV, open fire, oven, hob, fridge, dishwasher. This area is available to those guests hiring the main house. To reach the bedrooms of the chestnut house, it is necessary to go outside and climb the stone stairs to the further 2 double bedrooms and shower room . Outside is the large pool (12M x 6M) & just up the hill is the stables.

Horse riding/archery/fishing/hunting: Marco is one of only 12 fully qualified Equestrian Trainers in Italy and will accompany guests on tours by the hour, day or week, or coast to coast! He is fully conversant with all the mountain tracks in the area, and is a fantastic guide for both the experienced, and inexperienced rider. There are usually between 6 and 9 'Arab' horses in The Stables, but Marco will obtain however many are required for your group. The cost of horse riding E15 per hour, but you may hire your 'own' horse for E50 per day. The countryside is beautiful for walking or riding, or just relaxing!!!!!!! Courses in archery, fishing weekends and hunting weekends can also be arranged in season - please e mail for details

Food (and ceramics!): Daniela will provide home cooked meals on request. Just ask for details of cost of B&B rates, half or full board. Or why not use her culinary skills just for those evenings when visiting a local restaurant, cooking or barbecuing does not appeal? Local dishes are prepared at very reasonable rates. Daniela is also a qualified Ceramicist and will be very happy to teach her art to any interested!

In summary: This holiday is a real rural retreat, and for those that love the countryside it is perfect for a relaxing break! When sunbathing by the pool, not a sound can be heard...... There is no obligation at all to take up Marco or Daniela on horse riding or cooking, and they will leave you fully in peace for a private time of pure R&R if that is what you are looking for (although please note their own house is on site). This is a very flexible holiday and extra beds can be provided if required And for those days not spent enjoying the countryside then the townie delights of Lucca, Barga, Pisa, Florence and Siena are all within reach..........

We spent a week in this beautiful house in June, 2009. The house was perfect for our 3 families (12 persons). The yard with it's views is great and the swimming pool is even bigger than in the photos!

The hosts have their house in the same property, but we had a perfect peace of our own (despite the ever-friendly house-dog Robby, who should have a story of it's own). Yet they were there for us, whenever we needed. We also had a dinner in their house one night, which was delicious and well worth it's price.

To get to the nearest bar you only have to roll 1,5 kilometers downhill, but to be able to climb back up you'd better not take too many beers :-) So, if you are a party-animal or if height makes you nervous, this place is not for you. There is a good shop in the village. Villagers were friendly and there were not too many tourists around.

The house is traditional, but it has everything you need to live comfortably and things worked. Ok, the hot water was not always hot but that's not very unusual in southern Europe. A car is a must and the road is quite exciting.

We recommend this place to anyone who likes trekking or horse riding in magnificent landscapes, medieval villages, swimming pool, dogs, mountains and woods, peace and good atmosphere. Kids loved the place.

As a happy ending we'd like to thank our friendly hosts for a great week and delicious raspberries, too.
