Lucca is a beautiful walled medieval city, which is the birthplace of Puccini. The city is mostly pedestrianised, which is fantastic for cycling and walking. Most guests enjoy cycling round the ramparts of the city wall. The countryside north of Lucca is breathtaking with many medieval villages perched on wooded hillsides. There are many beautiful palazzos and vineyards to visit in the area. Florence, Pisa and the beaches are all within a short distance. There are excellent restaurants, including a Michelin star, within 10 minutes of the house. The Tuscan ski resort of Abetone is only 1 hour away and has generally excellent snow from January to March. The immediate surroundings of the house are beautiful and most guests enjoy this most, whether for relaxation or exercise. There are lovely walks and circuits ( between 2 to 6 kms ) in the wooded hills around the property. Visit the ruined church on top of the hill. See the snow-capped Apuan Alps from the hillside opposite the house.

Further details for this holiday villa rental in Lucca, Italy

The history of A Parino: A Parino is surrounded with history. The valley was a key Etruscan settlement. Ancient Etruscan pottery has been found close to the stream, which runs through the property. The house is also located on the Via Clodia, the major Roman road, which linked Rome, Lucca and Luna. The names of the surrounding villages indicate the number of leagues (one and half miles) they were from Lucca. There is a small Roman footbridge close to the house and a beautiful Roman church in San Donato, 1 km away. The strategic location of the house is also apparent as it stands on the Gothic Line, the German main defensive line in 1944-45 against the Allied advance from southern Italy. For over 9 months, the Americans and Germans fought between opposing hillsides. On the hill behind A Parino, there are remains of German bunkers, while in front lies the ruined church, held by the Americans. While enjoying the tranquility and beauty of A Parino and the countryside, your imagination is captured by its history!

Local Festivals: There are two major festivals in the area during the summer. For opera fans or people who would enjoy an evening out in the stars, there is the world famous Puccini Festival at Torre di Lago, 30 minutes away, which takes place throughout July and August. For 2009, the operas are La Boheme, Tosca, Manon Lescaut and Turandot. For rock or pop fans, there is the Lucca Summer festival, where concerts take place in July in the Piazza Napoleone in the centre of Lucca. For 2009, there are concerts by Lenny Kravitz, James Taylor, Anastacia and James Morrison.

Other Activities: The Ski resort of Abetone is 1 hour away by car

A Parino was definitely more than we expected and more: the photos do not do justice to the whole property. Absolutely fabulous location. The children enjoyed roaming around, catching tadpoles in the stream and chasing fireflies. Excellent restaurants nearby. Lovely candlelit barbecues at home with local fresh produce. We will return!! A superb summer holiday. Thank you to Michael for all his expert advice on what to see and where to eat. We loved having breakfast on the terrace every morning, watching the sun appear from over the hills. Special thanks to Paolo and Alda for keeping the property and pool wonderfully clean and their friendly courtesy. English guests

An excellent family holiday in a beautiful house so close to Lucca. We had a great week's stay - 3 families with young children. Location is idyllic and rustic...over the hills is the medieaval town of Lucca so everything is easily accessible. We enjoyed taking the hikes around the property, up to the old church, perched on the hillside, or round to Domazzano. Great pizzerias nearby but we cooked and ate mostly at home. The barbecue was well used. If you are looking for a easy, peaceful place to have a reunion for some old friends, this hits the sweet spot. Lots of space to stay independent but equally very comfortable for large group dinners.

I think other reviewers have also mentioned Michael, Alda and Paolo. They were a great help. When one of the kids accidentally hurt himself, we were able to use the local Green Cross in Ponte a Moriano, 3 kms away, to get him fixed up.

We soon fell into a relaxed rhythm of late dinners, early breakfasts, sightseeing, lunch, siesta and swim. Stress free. Tranquilo as the Italians call it.

Fantastic location

Great place for a relaxing and uplifting holiday. Very comfortable house. Our friends stayed in the converted barn, which is very modern, and an easy 100m to the main house. We planned to go to Florence, Pisa and the beach but ended up hanging out in the house because it was so nice. We walked around the countryside and everyone was very friendly. On very hot days, we chilled in the pool. There is a fantastic restaurant - Antica Locanda - 2 minutes away, near Ponte a Moriano, which was excellent for beef and veal. We plan to return!

We had a wonderful family holiday last summer in A Parino. The property location is excellent...so rural...yet so close to Lucca and to great restaurants. Breakfast on the verandah was one of the highlights watching the sun rise over the hills in front. In the evenings the kids would run around catching fireflies. The house is very comfortable and beautifully decorated. Our friends stayed in the newly restored barn, which is right behind the house. At the end of the stay, it felt like a real home. We had outstanding service from Michael, who lives a few kms away, and was able to give great advice on the local area: restaurants, trips to Pisa, Florence and the beaches, shopping and the many festivals in Lucca and Torre di Lago. Paolo and Alda live round the corner and did all the daily cleaning and pool maintenance. They were a lovely couple. Overall a wonderful, family holiday.
