| Notes: | Apart from a beautifully equipped kitchen, in the house is an updated, extensive guide to many restaurants in the entire area -- from simple, modestly priced ones to elegant, expensive ones. One delightful, and relatively recent, development in the region is the proliferation of very reasonable country restaurants in rural settings. (One of the best, modestly priced ones is only 1.5 miles from the house.) There are also brochures and information on local sites and other things of interest further afield. |
BARGA
Barga is three miles away (five or ten minutes) by car or fifty minutes on foot. Whichever route you take is beautiful. The little road winds down the mountainside past chestnut trees, cultivated fields, a stream with several waterfalls and glimpses of the town below. The foot path, which is more direct, is an old Roman road paved with stone and it is one of the most remarkable walks of the area. Barga is a very charming town of 10,000 people. Until the unification of Italy, it was under Florentine dominion and it retains a feeling of Florentine elegance in its architecture. You will find all the groceries and other supplies you need in Barga.
HIKING, SWIMMING & TENNIS
Quite apart from the special walk to Barga, this area is a hiker’s paradise with many trails and country roads leading to interesting villages. And, for the few who are true mountain climbers, there are the nearby Apuan peaks. Barga has a new public swimming pool and tennis courts. The pool is in an especially lovely location with mountain views. It has plenty of deck chairs and a bar with an arbour where simple food is served. Just a few minutes drive further than Barga is “Il Ciocco,” which is a large hotel on a neighbouring hilltop, where there is also a good pool and there are many tennis courts, as well as riding stables and other entertainment.
THE SEA
The expansive beach at Viareggio is approximately an hour and a quarter away by way of Lucca. Another route to arrive at the sea is the dramatic drive over the marble mountains by way of Castelnuovo to Forte dei Marmi -- and other coastal towns and beaches. Castelnuovo, a partly walled town, deserves a stop, especially on Thursday mornings when there is a big outdoor market.

10/14/01 'We are back and filled with great memories of your wonderful home in Sommocolonia. It was more lovely than the pictures could ever convey -- the house, the garden, the view. Thank you from all of us for sharing it with us. The care with which you have restored it was very evident in every nook and cranny. We all loved reading the story of how you came to purchase it and nurture it through the years. It's very clear how much you care for the house, the village, and its role in world history.
Needless to say, we would love to return some day. You have been a
generous host.' Best wishes, Paul Mohrbacher
