Photos and Description of this Lucca holiday villa Let as two separate wings for 8-10 + 8-10, or a large family house for 16 - 20

This early 14th century villa has been in the same family since it was built over 600 years ago. The owners were rich, illustrious patricians of Lucca, so it's hardly surprising that they chose a perfect location for their home. The villa is secluded yet close to town. It sits high in the foothills of the Tuscan Apennines, overlooking the whole of the plain of Lucca, with its olive groves and ancient Mediterranean cypresses. Recently, this 17 room historic house has been restored and divided into two self contained sections, sharing a spacious classical garden with a magnificent view, and a pool. Traces of the original structure remain in the refinished façade, providing a fascinating blend of historical styles from the 14th to the 18th century. And inside, the house is a harmonious mix of five centuries of stylish Tuscan décor - solid wood furniture, terra cotta floors, beamed ceilings, several fireplaces, austere family portraits, a collection of 16th century books and more.

These can accommodate an extra 4 people who might be visiting for part of the holiday and do not require complete privacy. Linen is provided, including beach towels. Maid service available on request. Suitability: There are a number of stairs and steps throughout the villa which may make it unsuitable for the infirm. Children are welcome so long as they respect the house and the antique furniture. The access road and the gates to the house are narrow - fine for all cars, but not suitable for camper vans.

Further details for this holiday villa rental in Lucca, Italy

The Villa today: Within the 13th century stone arches, the 17th century stone angles and the brick window frames, lie every creature comfort of modern living. During the recent renovation the family has added: central heating, excellent plumbing and electricity, fully equipped bathroom and kitchens, satellite TV and modern household appliances. The Villa is ideal for rest and relaxation, By day the classical garden is an perfect place to relax with areas of sunshine or shade. Sitting on the lowest level of the terraced garden, the swimming pool is set apart from the house and overlooks the whole valley. For the more competitive, there is a ping pong table too or the possibility of walking 5 kilometres to the top of the hill where the views are wonderful. Eat out on balmy evenings:there is a barbecue and a panorama below of fairy lights - if you are lucky the owls will serenade you.

The Town of Lucca: Originally built in Roman Times, Lucca (population 90,000) came into prominance in the 13th Century and has a rich historical and artistic heritage. Piazza San Michele, Lucca’s main square, was where Julius Caesar, Pompey and Crassus met in 60 BC to form the first triumvirate. The Roman Amphitheatre - once the scene of gladiatorial combat - is now a magnificent piazza, surrounded by medieval buildings. Within the unbroken 16th century ramparts that protect this untarnished jewel, the city is a maze of tiny streets littered with marble fronted Romanesque churches, mediæval houses and Renaissance palaces.(If you hire a bicycle you can cycle round Lucca on the top of the walls). Via Fillungo, Lucca's main artery is a bustling, pedestrian-only street with scores of elegant shops. Some of its restaurants and belle epoque cafes were frequented by famous native sons like composers Luigi Boccherini and Giacomo Pucini.

Amenities and Excursions: The villa is well placed for a number of day trips by bus, train or car. Both Pisa and the popular seaside resort of Viareggio are 45 minutes away by car. Florence is an hour away by bus, train, or car. Distances from the villa: Lucca 15 km / 9 miles, Pisa 40 km / 25 miles, Viareggio 45 km / 28 miles, Florence 80 km / 50 miles, Sienna 140 km / 87 miles, Milan 320 km / 200 miles, Rome 360 km / 220 miles. There is a Golf Course and Tennis Courts near Lucca (30 minutes away). SHOPS: there is a large supermarket 20 mins down the road; a butcher, grocer and greengrocer only 15 mins away and a small village shop that sells all basics in an unspoilt medieval village less than half a mile away (ask the caretakers for the opening hours). RESTAURANTS: there are many to choose from in Lucca and others close by. The nearest are a family restaurant serving generous portions about 1 km away, or a pizzeria within 10 minutes walk; the finest, in nearby Ponte a Moriano, has a Michelin star.

The Villa greatly exceeded all of our expectations. The surrounding country-side was magnificent as well. Our 'care-takers' truly took care of the Villa as well as any needs that we had and did it unobtrusively and with style. D R Powell
We very much enjoyed our stay at the villa. It was everything we imagined and much, much more. We had no idea there would be such a spectacular view from the garden, or that it would be so centrally located to so many wonderful and memorable cities and sites. It is a perfect blend of 14th century charm and modern convenience. We hope to return again in future.

Villa in the hills above Lucca

Review Submitted: November 24, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We have just returned from two amazing weeks at this Villa. (Jul/Aug 2008) The villa has been in the same family for nearly 800 years and we met some of the family whilst we were there. They were incredibly hospitable, as if we were new friends. We had the west wing and couldn't believe the size. There were 7 of us and the villa would easily take 10. You can tell that the house is still used by the family at certain times of the year, everything had been thought of. It is definately not like some houses that come equiped with just six of everything from Ikea. The views were amazing, great pool and great weather. It is hilly but the walks and the swimming helped to offset the damage we were doing with the food! The restaurant A Palazzo is a 15-20 minute walk, great food and incredible value. The very best food in the area is cooked by the house keeper. If you stay here do book her in advance to come and cook for you it really is to a very high standard and very reasonable. My husband's comment was that after a few days 'this place really gets under your skin'. To all the family - thank you for letting us come and stay in such a beautiful and historic building we hope to come again.
