The village and its facilities:
Monticchiello has 2 restaurants, 2 cafés and 2 general stores. There is also a post-office and a cash dispenser. Ideal for those with young children as there is hardly any traffic at all, picturesque strolls can be enjoyed in its little squares and gardens, as well as scenic walks around the walls and up to the tower at the top of the village.
Every summer between July and August the famous 'Teatro Povero di Monticchiello' stages a locally produced open-air drama every night for a month in the village square, and supper can be eaten in the crypt of the village church (turned into a taverna for the occasion). Booking is advisable as this event is very popular!
For those visiting in winter there are chamber music concerts through the Christmas season in the ancient granary.
Nearby places to visit:
Only 3 kms away is Pienza, jewel of the Renaissance, and also within easy distance are San Quirico with its beautiful Romanesque collegiate church, Montepulciano and Montalcino with their world famous wines, Bagno Vignoni with its hot springs and ancient Roman bath....and many other little-known historical spots. Siena, Florence and Perugia are all about an hour's drive away, and there is an excellent train service to Rome, or as a change, you can take a boat trip to the islands on Lake Trasimeno (40 mins away).
Other activities:
Whether you are an enthusiastic hiker or just wish to explore the countryside on foot, there are numerous beautiful walks in the area. In summer, there are several pleasant open-air swimming-pools all about 20 mins drive away, and it is possible to spend a day at the beach - a longer drive (60 mins) but worth it.
