Maremma is the name given to the southernmost area of Tuscany. The rolling hills of this area are famous for their unspoilt natural beauty. Typical local products are Pecorino cheese, olive oil and the local wines Morellino di Scansano and Montecucco. This is a great place to experience a rural way of life that has changed little for hundreds of years. Roccalbegna was built by the Republic of Siena as its southern outpost over 500 years ago and it's changed very little since then. It offers the following services: an exceptional trattoria / pizzeria, a bar, a butchers, a couple of well-stocked general grocers, a bank, a post office and a chemists. There's a mini-market on Monday mornings. 'Roccalbegna is one of the finest villages in southern Tuscany', The Rough Guide to Tuscany and Umbria, April 2003.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Roccalbegna, Italy

Saturnia: The hot sulfurous waters of Saturnia have been famous since Etruscan times. There are two ways of taking the waters: the 'Terme' spa hotel which offers several pools, refreshment facilities and an extensive range of spa treatments or the open air, free entry waterfall down from the village. The springs are a 20 minute drive from the apartments. An 18 hole course is open to the public at the Terme di Saturnia Hotel.

The coast & nature reserves: The southern Tuscan coastline offers some of the most pristine bathing in Italy. Castiglione della Pescaia has consistently been awarded the top 'clean beach' award by the EU. If you tire of the 'ombrellone' of Castiglione and Marina di Grosseto head for the beach in the 'Parco Naturale di Maremma' for kilometre after kilometre of golden sand without an 'ombrellone' in sight and few people even in August (under an hour's drive away). The limestone cliffs of the WWF's Rocconi reserve are visible from the apartments. This is one of the WWF's largest reserves in Italy. It is home to several rare species of birds. A small fee is charged for entry. At certain times of year night visits are possible. Visit the 'Parco faunistico di Monte Labbro' to see the original wildlife of the area including wolves.

Classical Tuscany: San Gimingnano, Siena and Florence are within easy reach, as are the hill top villages of Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza. Day trips to Rome are possible too.

Other Activities: swimming - 20 minutes to a pool, an hour's drive to the coast

We've had a lovely two weeks putzing about the countryside and reading in the garden. Highly recommend the Etruscan remains around Sovana as well as a visit to the bookbinder in town.
Thank you so much for your hospitality, great advice - and for the lemons! We shall be recommending Zolferate to our friends and relations.

Un accueil tres sympa et un endroit superbe qui font vite oublier le chemin rempli de poussiere (!) et nous plongent dans le charme de la Toscane.

Kath and I have just had a really great week. Accommodation is very good, views superb and your advice and guidance great! The sausages from the local butcher are great - but try the 'porchetta' - it's really very good. Food has been excellent from the local restaurants as has the wine! Would recommend a trip to Siena - well worth the visit.
A really great time, Ian and Kathleen, UK

Outstanding accomodation for winter or summer

Review Submitted: October 7, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
Having been back twice now, I would highly recommend a stay in this quaint and relaxing accomodation.

The service I received while there was some of the best I have experienced and Graham is extremely accomodating and friendly. I have stayed in both cottages and equally they are beautifully designed to fit in with the surroundings, very clean and cosy. Graham knows all the restaurants and sights in the area and was particularily great at introducing or directing us to these.

This part of Tuscany is extremely beautiful all year round. I especially like my trip in December just as Tuscany starts getting festive.

This is the perfect place to stay in the area, either to relax or if on business, to focus. Grahams Wi-fi is no doubt the best in the area and I was able to do everything I needed while there. I espeically like the fact it sits on the edge of a valley, waking up to such a perfect picture like landscape was definately a highlight!

Tuscan rural retreat

catruth Catania, Sicily, Italy
Review Submitted: January 5, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2008
I have spent several pleasant short holidays recharging in Podere San Angelo, far from the madding crowd and city lights. The apartments have been beautifully renovated in the old Sicilian style and Graham, the owner was extremely helpful and courteous. The property is situated in the heart of the Maremma, one of the most remote, unspoiled areas of Italy and there are lots of bridle paths to walk along and explore the countryside. I spotted deer, porcupines and lots of different kinds of birdlife. The nearby village has a couple of excellent, well-priced restaurants. Siena and other medieval hill-top towns and villages are within easy reach by car. No nightclubs but I had a curious experience wallowing in the hot sulphur springs of Saturnia at midnight, contemplating the vast swathes of the Milky Way.

Rural Tuscany

Paul&Ann Worcestershire, England
Review Submitted: January 2, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2008
Zolferate is in a lovely, quiet rural part of Tuscany, and the cottage is comfortable and well-equipped, with super views across to the village of Roccalbegna and down the valley to the sea in the distance. Graham is an excellent host - friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. There is lots of walking locally, but we'd recommend having a car available - easy driving (not much traffic) to plenty of interesting places. We particularly enjoyed: Sorano, Pittigliano and the Etruscan sites; a day at the seaside (Monte Argentario); a trip to the top of Monte Amiata; the gardens at la Foce. And the food in the local restaurants !

Calm, warm, fresh.... very nice english landlord

We spent our fantastic vacation at Podere Sant'Angelo situated in this very characteristic south Tuscany area after staying in the "colle fiorentina" close to Florence. The location is quite unspoilt so it's more authentic than Tuscany's more famous but created landscapes around Florence and Siena ....
The apartment was very clean and all the facilities worked well. We enjoyed a very nice view, and especially the quiet location!! We also appreciated the very good local red wine provided by the landlord, Mr. Graham.
I recommend Podere Sant'Angelo to all my friends who live in Milan.
