San Miniato, in the province of Pisa, is known as the “town of the XX leagues”, as it is situated in the centre and heart of Tuscany between Florence and Pisa, Lucca and Siena. The town has Germanic roots in the Middle Ages, after this it became a flourishing free commune and then it followed the fate of the Florentine signory to become one of the most important towns in the Tuscan Grand Duchy. San Miniato has a great history behind it which has left a great patrimony in art and culture. In the historicalcentre there is a succession of squares and monumental buildings and its museums hold a treasure trove of works of art. The countryside around the town is magnificent, uncontaminated rural hinterland with Romanesque churches, Medici villas and old castles. Standing out in the range of typical products is the highly esteemed San Miniato white truffle, which is found in abundance in the hills around San Miniato. All this is why San Miniato is a town of art, culture, theatre and truffle.
