Photos and Description of this Fivizzano holiday farmhouse Sleeps up to 8 in 4 double bedrooms with 2 bathrooms and secluded sunny gardens

If, like us, you prefer a spacious, quiet and relaxing hideaway set amongst tranquil and unspoilt surroundings then this farmhouse is ideal. The Lunigiana in Northern Tuscany is a very beautiful unexplored part of Italy close to the Cinque Terre, the Ligurian Riviera and the cities of Pisa, Florence, Genova and Parma. With medieval origins, the village of Turlago is a haven of peace and quiet, nestling in the foothills of the Appenines and flanked by the famous 'Carrara' marble mountains. Here there is a timeless serenity where sounds are gentle, no one hurries, and life carries on much as it has done for generations. The farmhouse sits on the southern edge of the village in a large well stocked secluded garden with a large flagstone courtyard. The large terrace faces southwest with all day sun offering wide uninterrupted views over the Rossaro valley to Fivizzano and the Spanish fortress at Aulla. With soaring eagles and stunning sunsets it is a magical place to unwind and relax.

With medieval villages, ancient castles, breathtaking views across fertile river valleys and ancient terraced hillscapes to dramatic mountain vistas this is the Lunigiana, Tuscany's best kept secret. Hidden away from the tourist trail the Lunigiana nevertheless enjoys easy access to the main cultural centres of Northern Italy and the sophisticated coastal villages of the Ligurian coast. Il Portone lies on the southern edge of the peaceful hamlet of Turlago less than ten minutes drive up through the vine and olive groves from the historic Malaspina town of Fivizzano and castle at Veruccola, and is easily reached from the airports at Genoa, Pisa, Parma and Milan with the Autostrade at Aulla (30 min). Close by are the picturesque ports of Lerici, St Terenzo and Portovenere, the famous Cinque Terre and the Ligurian Riviera; the ancient cities of Luni, Sarzanna and Lucca (Pucini's birthplace), the beaches at Forte di Marmi, the 'Cararra' marble mountains and the Garfargnana national park

'We enjoyed everything so much it is difficult to even start to explain our feelings....the last two weeks me and my sister had peace and quiet and the house for ourselves - heavenly, just heavenly'.

It's hard to describe how much we enjoyed your place at Turlargo. We really enjoyed Rome but were anxious to get somewhere that the pace was a bit slower. Your directions were good and the additional help from via Michelin at your suggestion worked well. My wife and I both commented that typically internet pictures make a place look a little better than it might be. However, in the case of Ilportone the pictures could not begin to do justice to the house or the setting. It was beautiful and very relaxing after the bussle of Rome.

We made good use of the house notes as we enjoyed taking in some of the events and places you suggested. We really enjoyed the people and town of Fivazzano. We explored the town and got down to the Tuesday morning market.

Mostly we couldn't wait to get back to the house to spend the evening on the terrace. The view and weather were spectacular. We enjoyed drinks, snacks and dinner out there each night.

We really enjoyed our trip and will return to Italy some day. We will be definitely be in contact as we would want to spend some of the trip at Ilportone. Thanks again for making your place available, it couldn't have been better !

After a long and littlebit "spooky" ride we arrived in Il Portone. Directly we forgot the ride when we saw the house and its beautifull view. We had a lovely week in silence with lovely weather and good food. Fivizziano is a nice village with an excellent icecream shop. It is nice and weird to be between the italians in the high season. We didn't see any tourist. For us it is a house and please to remember and to return.

Peace in Italy

Review Submitted: August 12, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We can thoroughly recommend this farmhouse. The views are magnificent and the house is well furnished, clean and well looked after. The beach at Lerici is worth visiting, and paying 9 euros for the day is well worth the expense. There are so many places to visit from this location, would recommend early starts though as places do close at 12.30 until 4.00-ish. Fivizzano is the nearest large town and has supermarkets, small shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. Do need a car. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience!!
