Photos and Description of this Seggiano holiday cottage The Casetta - a charming honeymoon cottage on our traditional Tuscan family farm

OLIVE FARM IN TUSCANY. The beautifully restored traditional stone farmbuildings are set within ten acres of our certified organic olive grove, a five minute walk away from the small village of Seggiano and a great bar / restaurant. With stunning views of rolling countryside and small hilltop villages, THE CASETTA is a beautiful and comfortable self-contained independent one bedroom cottage which can sleep three. Situated on the shoulder of Monte Amiata, sacred mountain of the Etruscans, famous for its hot mineral water springs, our farm is a wonderful place to relax in between seeing the famous sights and discovering the secrets of this lesser known area of Tuscany. The area in general is wonderfully unspoilt and still a habitat for wild flowers and animals such as boar, porcupine, hare and deer; even fresh water crab have been spotted in the local stream. For more pictures see the holidays page on our site (contact us for link).

Details for The Casetta, Agriturismo Vignone 1 Bedroom, Sleeps 3, 1 Bathroom

The Casetta is an independent building about 15m distant from the main farm house, with its entrance and own private covered patio area overlooking the olive grove and facing towards the mountain. It's an ideal honeymoon cottage. The construction is a simple ground floor living space including kitchen area, wood burning stove, dining and sitting area with doors opening onto the olive grove beyond the covered porch. A spiral staircase leads up to the first floor bedroom (one double and one single bed) plus en suite shower room (shower, WC, bidet & washbasin). There are lovely views in all directions. The casetta is provided with washing machine, hairdryer, iron+ ironing board, juicer, stainless steel cookware and all the linens are pure cotton. We provide plenty of towels and bed linens for your use, though we would ask you to bring your own beach / pool towels for swimming, and to wash dirty linens when you take clean ones. Wifi network is available in the garden.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Seggiano, Italy

What to expect from the area: In a really wonderful undiscovered corner of southern Tuscany, the medieval hilltop village of Seggiano lies at a height of 550m on the slopes of Monte Amiata, an extinct volcano and sacred mountain of the Etruscans. The summit is good for walks through the cool beech forests and mushroom hunting in the appropriate season. In April and early May wildflowers abound; the countryside and views are breathtaking. There's a strong local culture of traditional food and wine production and we make sure that our guests know where to find the best places to eat and interesting places to visit. Stefania's restaurant offers an excellent meal, an aperitivo or a capuccino just a short walk from the farm. Despite being 'off the beaten track' the famous centres of Italian Renaissance culture are within easy reach by car; Siena is sixty km and Florence, Arezzo and Assisi are about one and a half hours away. To the south of the mountain, towards the coast (75km) one can find Roman and Etruscan sights

In terms of the immediate vicinity the surrounding villages have shops for all non-specialist supplies, good fresh (often locally grown) food, a cinema, gym and a choice of restaurants. Grosseto is the nearest large commercial centre with national and international rail connections. The only period in which the area gets crowded is August when mostly Italian tourists escape the heat in the cities for the refreshing mountain walks and air of Amiata. In general the countryside in southern Tuscany is wilder and far less manicured than in the north of the region. There are really brilliant walking itineraries (not for mid summer) and the natural surroundings, birdsong, wildflowers and wild herbs are truly sublime in springtime. There are many decent restaurants in the area and some really excellent ones. We can supply you with details and suggested itineraries for day trips. For more info see the 'holidays in Tuscany' link on our website, please contact us for web site address.

Swimming: The thermal hot pools, which can be found around the mountain due its volcanic history, are fantastic in cooler weather. The nearest, Bagno Vignone (20 minutes) is a calcium spa swimming pool, whilst Bagno San Felippo, Saturnia and Petriolo have more sulphurous water. A good way to de-stress is to have a soak under the cascade at one of the 'terme', letting the water massage back and shoulders. There is a choice of 'funky' natural pools to visit, or entrance fee-paying swimming pools. For summer bathing there is a nice privately run pool in the next village, Castel del Piano, (about 10 minutes by car), dips in local streams or a trips to the seaside or Lake Bolsena.

Other Activities: Wildlife. Hot thermal pools. Walking. Exploring small villages off-the-beaten-track. Great local food and wine. Unspoilt area off the tourist trail!

Rest and Relaxation

Toon Traveller Newcastle Upon Tyne, England
Review Submitted: August 3, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
What a fantastic place. We spent a week at the Casetta at the end of June in glorious 30plus degree sunshine. It’s just the right size for a comfortable stay for a couple or family with a small child. Not that you want to do too much of it on holiday but there’s all the ‘mod cons’ for cooking, washing etc. The Casetta is set in a beautiful, well maintained garden within the grove and the views are just as spectacular as the website photos look. Although there are other properties in the vicinity they’re far enough away and hidden by the groves that you have complete privacy.
The local supermarket and bakery should provide most if not all your basic needs for food etc. but we did enjoy popping over to Castel Del Piano to do shopping there too. Find the general store which sells white and red wine from the vat for 1 Euro 30 a litre! It’s got a really good deli counter too.
A straightforward 2 ½ hour drive from Pisa airport with no problem finding our way thanks to Peri’s directions. We also managed day trips taking in Sienna, the top of Monte Amiata, Montalcino, and San Gimignano during the week without feeling we were doing too much although some of the nearer hilltop villages are just as interesting & beautiful to see. If you intend to visit during the summer months make sure you get a car with air con. We found it a godsend. We also set off on our day trips fairly early so that we could still spend time relaxing in & around the Casetta watching the wildlife going about its business before going out in the evening.
The local restaurants as well as others in the nearby villages were all very good. We particularly enjoyed Sergio’s in Castel Del Piano. Of course, we barbequed as well!
Every night was finished off with a bottle of wine or two sitting outside the Casetta enjoying the peace and tranquillity gazing at night sky totally unpolluted by any street lighting etc. This is just a great place to relax. Our only regret now was booking for just one week. A return visit is a must!!
On a personal note, many thanks to Katja for making us feel so welcome and helping us with information and tips.

Short week with LONG memories

Ont couple Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Review Submitted: October 14, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
Could only stay for one week ( NA is still in the 19th century when it comes to vacation time off! ) That being said, we were able to see and do just about everything we had planned to do. Our plan was NOT to see everything; we wanted a peaceful, quiet time. Casetta gave us that.
The property is centrally located to wine, cheese and olive regions as well as areas of great historical value and scenic beauty. The house is cozy, not tiny, with all of the amenities needed. The owners are very helpful and a wealth of info ( especially where to eat! )
Be well prepared for driving; the roads are well marked and in good repair. The Italian driver is a professional; you must be prepared for them; we in NA are amateurs.
Siena is a must. We believe others when they say it beats Florence. At this time of year the areas are not as touristy so you do not feel hemmed in.
The weather can be iffy in Oct; we had rain, hail and very cold temps for a 3 hour period one day, then it climbed back to 70F and sunny. During this, the next valley stayed in the 80's. It is said that the summer can be VERY hot. As there is no air conditioner, this may present problems to some. The mountain breezes should help alleviate any discomfort.
All in all, be prepared for an enjoyable stay, where you can do as much or as little as you want and not feel you missed out
Ciao!!

Certainly off the beaten track with numerous windy roads leading there, but worth the effort - wonderful setting. Kind and attentive owners and lots of info at the house for the surrounding areas. Clean and comfortable accomodation - ideal for two people.

Birds of Seggiano

Review Submitted: June 15, 2008 Date of Stay: April 2008
We spent a weeks holiday in early May and as a birdwatcher was struck by the variety of species on the farm and attach my list in the order I saw them as follows;
starling, swift, swallow, house martin, house sparrow, blue tit, great tit, cuckoo, blackbird, green woodpecker, nuthatch, jay, carrion crow, hooded crow, golden oriole, serin, blackcap, collared dove, feral pigeon, nightingale, goldfinch, greenfinch, jackdaw, magpie, common buzzard, hoopoe, pied wagtail, spotted flycatcher, sardinian warbler, grey wagtail, scops owl, tawny owl, lesser spotted woodpecker, robin, wren, short toed creeper.
Other birds seen in the surrounding area were;
black redstart, tree sparrow, wood pigeon, hen harrier, stonechat, whitethroat, willow warbler, chiffchaff, red backed shrike, corn bunting, lanner falcon, whinchat, blue rock thrush and bee eater.
As well as birds there were other creatures such as hare and deers and a wealth of butterflies.
For nature lovers this is a beautiful holiday desination.

Peaceful holiday

Mazza UK
Review Submitted: May 20, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
We really enjoyed our week in the Casetta - it sounds very corny to say it, but it really is the perfect place to get away from it all.

The setting of the house is exactly as it looks on the photographs provided - the views are spectacular. Although, small and simple, the place is very well equipped and has a lovely log burner should the weather turn (it did while we stayed in May).

Be prepared for plenty of driving along very windy roads because there is a lot to see and do in the surrounding area. The nearest wine towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano, whilst being very touristy, are worth a visit, especially for stocking up on wine - many places will courier boxes home at a charge. The nearby natural sulphur spas are a must - especially after lots of walking. The best experience by far is a stroll, ice-cream in hand, around some of the more rural towns and villages.
